Chapter 2 - THE CHILD WHO WOULD NOT LET GO

Emily refused to release Richard’s sleeve when the paramedics entered.

Every uniform made her recoil.

Every unfamiliar hand caused her to curl tighter against the barn wall.

Richard remained on the floor beside her while a female medic explained each movement before touching the child.

“I’m going to check your wrist.”

Emily looked at Richard.

He nodded.

Only then did she extend her arm.

The medic’s expression changed beneath professional calm. Emily’s pulse was weak. Her body temperature was low despite the warm afternoon, and several bruises appeared beneath the sleeves of her dress.

“We need to transport her immediately.”

Veronica stood outside the barn in handcuffs.

She had attempted to run through the rear field but slipped in the mud before reaching the fence. Now she shouted that Richard was violating a lawful custody order.

Detective Mara Quinn arrived and examined the document Veronica produced from her handbag.

It appeared official.

The order named Veronica temporary guardian of Emily Hale due to Richard’s alleged emotional instability and prolonged abandonment.

Richard read the date.

The hearing had occurred six weeks after Emily disappeared.

“I was in Boston coordinating the search that day.”

“The file says you were served and failed to appear,” Mara said.

“I never received anything.”

Veronica smiled from beside the patrol car.

“He was too busy protecting his reputation.”

Richard ignored her and climbed into the ambulance with Emily.

At the hospital, Dr. Helen Park documented severe malnutrition, dehydration, untreated anemia, and repeated bruising. Emily’s stomach had become so sensitive that even ordinary food caused pain.

“The soup may have been nearly all she received,” Dr. Park said.

“For how long?”

“We’ll need more tests, but the deficiencies developed over months.”

Richard stood behind the glass while nurses cleaned Emily’s feet and changed her into hospital clothing. She continued clutching the spoon from the barn.

A nurse tried to take it for evidence.

Emily screamed.

Richard entered only after Dr. Park asked him to.

“You can keep it for now,” he told her. “No one will make you eat with it.”

Emily looked at him carefully.

“Veronica said you stopped looking.”

“I never stopped.”

“She showed me a newspaper.”

“What did it say?”

“That you sold my room.”

Richard closed his eyes.

Her bedroom remained exactly as she had left it. The night-light still worked. Her books remained on the shelf. Each birthday, he had placed a wrapped present beside her bed.

“Your room is waiting for you.”

Emily’s lips trembled.

“She said you wanted a new family.”

“There is no new family.”

“You had meetings.”

“I had people searching.”

“She said the men were looking because you wanted me arrested.”

Richard sat where she could see both his hands.

“You did nothing wrong.”

Emily studied his face as though searching for the hidden condition.

“Can I sleep without finishing the soup?”

“Yes.”

“Will you be angry?”

“No.”

She finally allowed the nurse to remove the spoon.

The evidence team tested the remaining liquid from the barn. It contained almost no nutritional value.

It contained something else.

A sedative.

Small repeated doses would keep Emily weak, drowsy, and easier to control.

Detective Mara returned to the hospital with news from the farm search.

The barn contained a mattress, children’s clothing, medication bottles, and a locked filing cabinet. Inside were printed court records, photographs of Emily looking ill, and monthly trust-payment statements.

Veronica had received more than three hundred thousand dollars as Emily’s medical guardian.

Each payment had been approved by Owen Price.

Richard’s attorney had repeatedly told him that Emily’s trust remained frozen until she was found.

That had been a lie.

Mara placed another document on the table.

It was a letter allegedly written by Richard.

It stated that he voluntarily surrendered temporary custody because grief had made him incapable of parenting.

The signature looked genuine.

The letter used language from a confidential session Richard once had with Owen after his wife’s death.

Only his attorney had known those words.

👉 Veronica had starved Emily into dependence, while Owen used Richard’s private grief to create the document that made the kidnapping appear legal.
