Chapter 3 - SIXTEEN MONTHS MISSING
Emily disappeared on a rainy Thursday afternoon.
Richard had been in New York attending an emergency board meeting when her school received a court order authorizing Veronica to collect her.
Veronica had once been Emily’s temporary caregiver after Anna Hale—Richard’s wife—died from cancer. She knew the teachers, passwords, family routines, and emergency contacts.
No one questioned her.
The order carried Owen Price’s legal certification.
By the time Richard landed in Columbus that evening, Veronica’s apartment was empty.
Her car had been abandoned near the airport.
Police assumed she had left the state.
Owen advised Richard to avoid public accusations until the court reviewed the custody documents.
That delay lasted three days.
Three days became three weeks.
By then, every reliable trail had gone cold.
Richard hired private investigators, offered rewards, and used company aircraft to follow possible sightings. Owen coordinated all legal requests and managed the trust funds supporting the search.
Now Richard understood that the man supervising the investigation had known where the money was going.
Possibly where Emily was.
Detective Mara questioned Veronica at the county jail.
Veronica insisted she had rescued Emily from an emotionally absent father.
“Richard left the child with employees while he traveled,” she said.
“He traveled because his company employed twelve thousand people,” Mara replied. “That did not authorize an abduction.”
“I had a court order.”
“Obtained through forged service.”
“That is Owen’s responsibility.”
“You accepted trust payments.”
“For Emily’s care.”
Mara placed photographs of the barn floor before her.
“Is that care?”
Veronica’s face remained cold.
“She refused proper food.”
“The soup contained a sedative.”
“She had panic attacks.”
“From being held in a barn?”
Veronica requested an attorney.
At the hospital, Emily spoke in fragments.
She remembered leaving school with Veronica and being told Richard had suffered a breakdown. They spent several nights in a motel, then moved to a house where the curtains stayed closed.
After police began distributing Veronica’s photograph, they moved again.
Eventually, Veronica brought her to the farm.
“How long were you in the barn?” Dr. Park asked.
Emily counted silently on her fingers.
“After the Christmas lights. Before the yellow flowers.”
Nearly five months.
“Did anyone else come?”
“A man.”
Richard leaned forward.
“What man?”
“He wore shiny shoes. Veronica called him Mr. Price.”
Owen had visited the barn.
Emily remembered him carrying papers and a silver laptop. He never spoke directly to her unless Veronica was nearby.
Once, she heard them arguing.
Veronica demanded more money.
Owen told her the trust review was approaching and Emily needed to appear medically fragile.
“What did that mean?” Richard asked gently.
Emily touched her thin arm.
“She gave me less food after that.”
Richard turned away before his anger frightened her.
Owen had not merely legalized the kidnapping after the fact.
He helped shape the child’s condition to support permanent guardianship.
Mara obtained a warrant for Owen’s office.
When officers arrived, his desk was empty.
His computer drives had been removed. His passport was gone. A shredding bin still contained warm paper fragments.
Owen had fled less than an hour after Richard found Emily.
The building’s garage camera showed him leaving with a rolling suitcase and one green document box.
His bank records revealed a recent transfer from Red Acre Holdings.
The same shell company that owned the farm.
The same company trying to sell it to Richard.
The proposed sale price was four million dollars above the land’s actual value.
If Richard had signed, Owen and Veronica would have received enough money to disappear permanently.
Richard stared at the unsigned contract.
The black briefcase had been prepared as the final step in a plan designed around his desperation.
He had spent sixteen months searching for Emily.
