Chapter 4 - THE FARM RICHARD CAME TO BUY
Red Acre Holdings had been created eleven months earlier.
Its mailing address belonged to Owen’s law firm. Its bank account received money from Emily’s medical trust and several large transfers from Richard’s private search fund.
Owen had been stealing from both sides.
He billed Richard for investigators who did not exist, then redirected Emily’s guardian payments to maintain the farm.
The arrangement rewarded the disappearance itself.
As long as Emily remained missing, Richard kept paying.
As long as Emily appeared medically dependent, the trust kept paying.
Veronica supplied the child.
Owen supplied the paperwork.
The farm purchase would have closed both schemes at once.
Detective Mara examined Richard’s briefcase.
Inside were the sale agreement, inspection waiver, and immediate wire authorization. Owen had urged Richard to bring the documents personally because the seller was supposedly elderly and distrustful of electronic signatures.
The seller had never existed.
Veronica expected Richard’s financial representative, not Richard himself, to arrive.
Richard changed the plan that morning after noticing a photograph attached to the property file.
A child’s red coat hung from a nail inside the barn.
It resembled Emily’s.
“I told Owen I was going personally,” Richard said.
“When?” Mara asked.
“Twenty minutes before leaving.”
“That gave him no time to move her.”
Richard felt sick.
If he had mentioned the decision the night before, Emily would have vanished again.
The police search uncovered a false wall behind the barn’s feed room. Inside were vegetables, canned soup, bottled water, and unopened boxes of nutritious children’s meals.
Veronica had access to proper food.
She deliberately withheld it.
The storage space also contained dresses, cosmetics, and expensive wine.
Veronica lived comfortably in the farmhouse while Emily slept on straw.
Dr. Park showed Richard the blood results.
The sedative in the soup matched a prescription issued to Veronica for insomnia. Repeated exposure explained Emily’s weakness and memory gaps.
“Will she recover?”
“Physically, I’m hopeful. Emotionally, recovery will take time.”
Richard looked through the glass.
Emily sat with a hospital nutritionist. A small bowl of plain rice rested in front of her. She stared at it as though it might become a punishment.
The nutritionist allowed her to decide whether to eat.
After several minutes, Emily lifted one grain with her fingers.
Richard had never understood how much courage a single bite could require.
Mara returned to the farmhouse after dark and found a locked room beneath the stairs.
The walls were covered with printed photographs of Richard.
Some showed him at press conferences pleading for Emily’s return.
Others showed him leaving restaurants or business meetings.
Veronica had collected articles claiming his company suffered while he searched.
Beneath one photograph, she had written:
He chose the company again.
The room suggested a motive beyond money.
Veronica resented Richard for ending their brief relationship.
After Anna’s death, Richard had relied on her help. Veronica interpreted that dependence as intimacy. When she began speaking as though she would replace Anna, Richard asked her to leave.
Three weeks later, Emily disappeared.
But one photograph did not belong with the others.
It showed Owen and Veronica standing beside Anna’s hospital bed two years before Anna died.
Richard had never seen Owen visit his wife without him.
On the back, Anna had written:
Do not let these two manage Emily together.
Richard’s hands began trembling.

Anna had suspected them long before the abduction.
