Chapter 11 - DANIEL’S FIRST AGREEMENT Daniel asked to speak with Claire without Harper present.
Vega refused complete privacy, so they sat across from each other in the police interview room while the detective watched through the glass.
The participation agreement was dated seven years earlier.
Claire had been four months pregnant.
Daniel had recently lost his position with a private ambulance company after reporting unsafe equipment. Their savings were nearly gone. Claire’s mother offered help, but Daniel refused to accept it.
Leonard approached him with a paid first-responder research program.
“I thought it was emergency-planning work,” Daniel said.
The agreement authorized Meridian to study family responses to pediatric medical risk. Daniel received $40,000 and access to specialized training.
“Did you know Harper would be the subject?”
“No.”
“Her name appears in the later amendment.”
“I never saw the amendment.”
The original contract allowed Meridian to collect medical data from Daniel’s future children. It also authorized home-safety assessments and access to emergency records.
Daniel had signed without showing Claire.
“Why?”
“I was ashamed we needed money.”
“That answer has followed every secret in this family.”
Daniel admitted Leonard later encouraged him to create community injector stations. Meridian supplied equipment and reimbursed purchases through Harper’s trust.
Daniel believed the program helped families.
It also made him dependent on Meridian funding.
When the clear-drop instructions arrived, Leonard reminded him that he had already participated in family allergy research.
“I thought it was an official continuation.”
“You wanted it to be official.”
“Yes.”
The contract did not prove Daniel intended to hurt Harper.
It proved Leonard had been shaping him since before her birth.
Claire asked whether he knew Evelyn investigated Meridian.
Daniel hesitated.
“She warned me.”
“How many times?”
“Three.”
“And?”
“I thought she hated Leonard because he challenged her control of the trust.”
“You let him teach you to distrust my mother.”
Daniel lowered his head.
The public audit revealed that Daniel received more than $190,000 in Meridian grants over seven years. Much of it funded legitimate emergency programs.
Some paid personal debts.
He had hidden those payments from Claire.
She removed her wedding ring and placed it on the table.
Daniel stared at it.
“Are you leaving me?”
“I am choosing not to answer while our daughter is still in danger.”
Leonard remained in federal custody. Martin was arrested for fraud and negligent trust management. Owen and Lauren were released under strict conditions while prosecutors considered charges.
Celeste entered protective custody and began cooperating.
Yet Meridian’s public upload contained references to another executive:

Daniel insisted it referred to him only as a research participant.
Claire no longer accepted explanations without proof.
Harper’s medical review produced reassuring news. Her lungs had recovered, and no permanent injury was detected.
But Dr. Roth found something troubling.
The almond proteins inside the clear drops did not match the concentrate used in the birthday punch.
Two suppliers were involved.
Leonard’s warehouse supplied the birthday packet.
The drops came from Daniel’s fire department.
Someone inside his station had been preparing them separately.
Daniel’s locker was searched.
Police found empty amber bottles, Meridian labels, and a notebook documenting Harper’s symptoms in handwriting that looked like his.
He denied writing it.
Forensic comparison remained inconclusive.
One entry read:
Increase dose after seventh birthday if acute challenge fails.
Claire stared at Daniel through the interview-room glass.
If he was telling the truth, someone had used his station, uniform, access code, signature, and medical reputation for years.
