The Pantry Camera / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - THE SECOND PINK STRAW The second child’s name was Hannah Vale.

Her birth certificate listed no father and identified Evelyn Vale as legal guardian.

Evelyn had been sixty-one when the child was born.

The document appeared impossible.

Further records showed Hannah was not Evelyn’s biological daughter. She entered a private guardianship program hours after birth and was placed with a family in West Virginia.

Her genetic profile was sealed.

Her medical file described the same severe almond allergy as Harper.

The two children had matching trust codes, medical schedules, and insurance values.

Meridian had treated them as paired subjects.

One lived inside Claire’s family.

The other lived outside it.

If Harper’s branch failed, Hannah became the surviving beneficiary.

Claire demanded immediate protection for the second child.

Federal agents reached the listed West Virginia address and found the house empty.

Breakfast remained on the table.

The back door stood open.

A pink-straw cup lay on the floor.

No family members were present.

The pantry camera in Claire’s house activated by itself.

Claire, Vega, Daniel, Owen, and Lauren gathered around the tablet as a live feed appeared.

The kitchen was empty.

Then a woman entered through the mudroom using a key.

She wore a raincoat and gloves. Her face stayed outside the camera angle.

She walked directly to the pantry and removed two cups.

One belonged to Harper.

The other had HANNAH written beneath the base.

The woman filled both from a small silver bottle.

Daniel moved toward the house entrance, but Vega stopped him.

“This may be prerecorded.”

The camera timestamp showed the current minute.

Claire called the officers guarding the property.

They reported no movement inside.

Yet the woman remained visible on the tablet.

She placed a pink straw into each cup.

Then she lifted one hand toward the camera.

A bracelet slipped from beneath her sleeve.

Claire stopped breathing.

It belonged to Evelyn.

Claire had fastened that bracelet around her mother’s wrist before the funeral.

The woman finally looked up.

The image distorted before her face became clear.

A voice came through the tablet.

Evelyn’s voice.

“Claire, if you found Hannah, then Leonard failed.”

Owen stepped backward.

Daniel stared at the screen.

The woman continued.

“Do not trust the child’s medical records. One girl is allergic. The other was made to appear allergic.”

Claire moved closer.

“Who are you?”

The woman turned toward someone entering the kitchen beyond the camera frame.

A child’s hand appeared.

It held Harper’s battered birthday crown.

Upstairs in the secured hospital wing, Harper was asleep beside a police officer.

Claire looked toward Vega.

“Where did she get that?”

The woman on-screen placed the crown beside the two cups.

Then she whispered:

“Ask Daniel which girl he carried home from the hospital six years ago.”

Every person slowly turned toward him.

Daniel’s face collapsed.

Before he could speak, Harper’s hospital monitor called Claire’s phone.

A nurse was screaming.

Harper’s bed was empty.

On the pillow lay a cup with a pink straw.
