Chapter 4 - THE DEED ON CASSIDY’S PHONECassidy’s smartphone was missing from the house.

Grant had demanded its password, but the recorder suggested he left without obtaining it.
Detective Monroe traced the device to a motel outside Livingston.
The room had been abandoned.
Inside, police found Grant’s blood on a towel, a broken lamp, and a copy of the Frontier Meridian sale agreement.
The contract carried Cassidy’s electronic signature.
It was scheduled to finalize at 1:00 a.m.—thirteen minutes after Lydia called Thomas.
The buyer would receive exclusive access to Reed Valley Ranch for twenty-five years.
Thomas examined the financial pages.
The proposed payment was far below market value. A separate consulting fee of three million dollars would go to a company controlled by Wade Mercer’s brother.
Grant would receive eight hundred thousand dollars.
“Cassidy discovered the kickback,” Monroe said.
“She would never sign this.”
“Someone used her phone.”
Hospital staff recovered Cassidy’s cloud backup. The phone had uploaded a photograph seconds before it went offline.
The image showed Grant standing beside the kitchen table holding the sale contract.
Mercer stood behind him wearing his uniform.
Cassidy’s caption read:
If anything happens to me, they did this together.
Another file contained screenshots of messages between Grant and Mercer.
Grant repeatedly insisted they should abandon the deal.
Mercer refused.
You already pledged the ranch as security.
If Cassidy reports us, we both go down.
Grant’s final reply came at 11:58 p.m.
I’ll get the phone. I won’t hurt her.
Thomas felt no sympathy.
Grant still entered the house, threatened Cassidy, and shoved her while she was pregnant.
But he may not have known Mercer intended to use medication.
Dr. Lowell called from the trauma unit.
Cassidy had regained consciousness.
Thomas and Monroe entered together.
“Grant pushed me,” Cassidy said. “Then he looked terrified.”
“Why?”
“I hit the stairs harder than he meant.”
“What did he do next?”
“He called Wade.”
Grant begged Mercer to send an ambulance. Mercer ordered him to leave and promised to handle the situation.
“Grant listened?” Thomas asked.
Cassidy’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
Her husband had known she was injured and left her alone with a corrupt deputy.
“Where is your phone?”
“Grant took it.”
“Did he know the password?”
“No.”
Cassidy touched her hospital wristband.
“Wade used my hand.”
Mercer had pressed Cassidy’s unconscious thumb against the phone sensor and the digital sale authorization.
The transfer required one more biometric approval.
Thomas’s.
He had received a ranch-insurance document by email the previous afternoon and approved it through fingerprint verification.
The attachment had concealed authorization language for the Frontier Meridian sale.
Thomas had unknowingly supplied the second signature.
His stomach turned.
Cassidy looked at him.
“Dad?”
“I signed something they sent me.”
“You didn’t know.”
“I knew Grant was pushing this deal. I should have read every page.”
Before Cassidy could answer, alarms sounded.
Dr. Lowell examined the monitor.
The baby’s heart rate was dropping again.
Staff rushed Cassidy toward surgery.
As the bed disappeared through the doors, Thomas’s phone received a bank notification.
