Chapter 6 - GRANT’S CONFESSIONPolice found Grant inside an unused chapel near the surgical wing.

His face was bruised, one sleeve was torn, and Cassidy’s smartphone rested inside his coat.

He raised both hands.

“I came back to help.”

Thomas nearly crossed the room before Monroe stopped him.

“You pushed my daughter down the stairs.”

“I pushed her away from the phone. I didn’t mean for her to fall.”

“You watched her hit the railing.”

“Yes.”

“You called your corrupt friend instead of an ambulance.”

“Yes.”

“You left Lydia alone with her.”

Grant closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

No explanation could reduce those choices.

He unlocked Cassidy’s phone and opened the deleted messages.

Mercer had obtained the contraction-inducing drug from a private obstetric supplier associated with Frontier Meridian’s medical division. The company had tested compounds designed to control labor timing in remote communities.

The medication remained experimental.

Mercer intended to trigger an emergency delivery before midnight. If the baby was born before the ranch transfer, the trust division would activate immediately.

That seemed to undermine the conspiracy.

Grant explained the remaining detail.

The drug was not expected to produce a living birth.

Thomas stared at him.

“They wanted the baby dead?”

“They wanted the trust provision challenged. Frontier’s lawyers argued that if the second child died during delivery, Cassidy’s shares remained under spousal control.”

“You agreed to this?”

“No.”

“You agreed to threaten her for the phone.”

“Yes.”

“You agreed to the forged sale.”

“Yes.”

Grant had accepted every step until the final consequence became impossible to ignore.

He still created the path Mercer used.

The phone contained a voice message recorded after Grant fled.

Mercer spoke to someone identified only as R.M.

“Cassidy is down. Grant lost his nerve. I’m administering the dose.”

A woman answered:

“Then make sure the hospital receives her. We need documented fetal distress.”

“Will the child survive?”

“That depends on which asset the grandfather chooses.”

Thomas replayed the voice.

He recognized it.

Rachel Monroe.

The detective standing beside him.

Everyone in the chapel turned.

Monroe slowly removed her hand from her weapon.

“That is not me.”

Grant backed toward the wall.

“It sounded like you when Wade played the call.”

Monroe ordered another investigator to take control while audio specialists examined the file.

The voice had been synthesized from public interviews and court testimony. Someone wanted the conspiracy to lead toward the detective who would investigate it.

Mercer had prepared a false target in advance.

Grant revealed the emergency safe’s location beneath the county administration building.

Police opened it.

Inside were cash, forged deeds, hospital credentials, and photographs of Thomas entering the ranch bank months earlier.

The final envelope contained a copy of Lydia’s birth certificate.

Her surname had been altered from Hale to Mercer.

A notarized statement claimed Wade Mercer was her biological father.

Grant stared at it.

“That’s impossible.”

Thomas looked toward him.

“Is it?”

Grant said Cassidy was already pregnant when they met but had always told him Lydia’s biological father died before her birth.

Cassidy had never named the man.

Mercer’s claim could give him parental standing over Lydia and indirect control of her ranch inheritance.

The birth certificate was forged.
