Chapter 5 - THE MAN IN THE PARAMEDIC JACKETFrontier Meridian claimed it had received valid approval from Cassidy, Thomas, and the ranch trust.

Detective Monroe issued an emergency fraud notice, but the company’s attorneys argued that ownership had already transferred.

The final authorization originated from Bozeman General Hospital’s network.

Someone used Cassidy’s biometric profile during her emergency treatment.

Nurse Hannah reviewed every device connected to Cassidy’s chart.

One fingerprint scanner had been placed beneath the clipboard used during her admission. Staff thought it was a routine insurance-verification pad.

It captured Cassidy’s thumb while she was unconscious.

“Who brought it?” Monroe asked.

A corridor camera showed a man in a paramedic jacket carrying the clipboard into the trauma room.

The image resembled Miles Carter, the paramedic who had warned Thomas that the baby was critical.

Miles was located at the ambulance station.

He denied carrying any clipboard.

His body camera supported him. He had remained beside the stretcher until hospital staff took Cassidy through the emergency doors.

Someone else had worn his jacket and copied his appearance from a distance.

The false paramedic entered through the ambulance bay using credentials assigned to Deputy Mercer.

He left six minutes later carrying Cassidy’s smartphone inside a sealed specimen bag.

Thomas remembered Mercer staring at Lydia’s elephant.

“He knew the recording could destroy him. He came to the hospital for the phone and the toy.”

“But he found only the phone,” Monroe said.

The sale authorization used Cassidy’s biometric capture and a passcode delivered to her device.

The phone left the hospital in the false paramedic’s possession.

Grant called Thomas from a blocked number.

“I didn’t know Wade would drug her.”

“You left her with him.”

“I was afraid.”

“So was your six-year-old daughter. She stayed.”

Grant began crying.

Thomas felt no pity.

“Where are you?”

“Wade tried to kill me at the motel.”

Grant claimed Mercer demanded the phone after finalizing the sale. When Grant refused to give it up, they fought.

“Why refuse then?” Thomas asked.

“Cassidy had scheduled the evidence to send to the state attorney. Wade wanted me to delete it.”

“You assaulted her to obtain the same phone.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Grant offered the phone’s cloud-recovery key and the location of Mercer’s emergency safe in exchange for police protection.

Monroe traced the call while Thomas kept him speaking.

Grant whispered:

“There’s something worse than the land sale.”

“What?”

“The medication wasn’t meant to induce labor.”

Thomas’s hand tightened around the phone.

“What was it meant to do?”

“To make the doctors choose Cassidy or the baby.”

The call disconnected.

The trace ended near Bozeman General.

Grant was somewhere inside or beneath the hospital complex.

Nurse Hannah checked Cassidy’s chart and found that her blood sample had been removed from the laboratory by a courier using Dr. Lowell’s signature.

The courier description matched Grant.

A security alarm sounded from the maternity corridor.

👉 Grant had returned to the hospital carrying the only evidence that could explain what Mercer injected into Cassidy.
