PART 5

Clara had prepared for that exact sentence.

This is my house.

You get out.

When Lillian pressed the emergency line, Clara did not ask what happened.

She heard Andrew shouting in the background.

She heard the baby crying.

She heard Patricia say, “Take him from her before she runs.”

That was enough.

Clara called the police.

Then the trust security office.

Then the estate manager.

Then the private gate service.

Within five minutes, Andrew’s access code was frozen.

Patricia’s guest code was revoked.

The side gate locked automatically.

The staff received a legal alert instructing them to take orders only from Lillian.

The trust document packet went to the responding officers’ mobile unit.

Lillian stood in the courtyard with her son against her chest while Andrew reached for her arm.

She stepped back.

“Do not touch me.”

He laughed.

“You think you can call someone?”

“I already did.”

Patricia’s face changed.

Only slightly.

Enough.

Andrew looked at the phone in Lillian’s hand.

“You’re recording?”

“Yes.”

“You are insane.”

“No.”

“I am prepared.”

That word enraged him.

Prepared meant she had not been as helpless as they believed.

Prepared meant they had been watched.

Prepared meant the house had a spine under the marble.

Andrew grabbed a plate from the table and threw it onto the ground.

Porcelain shattered across the courtyard.

The baby screamed.

Lillian turned her body to shield him.

Patricia shouted, “Look what you made him do!”

Lillian looked at her.

“I made him reveal himself.”

Andrew stepped forward again.

That was when the first police cruiser pulled through the gates.

Then the second.

Guests scattered backward.

Patricia’s hand flew to her mouth.

Andrew spun toward the driveway.

“What did you do?”

Lillian lifted her chin.

“I called the people who understand property law.”

The officers entered the courtyard carefully.

One looked at the broken plates.

One looked at the crying baby.

One looked at Andrew standing between Lillian and the front door.

“Ma’am,” the officer said.

“Are you Lillian Mercer?”

“Yes.”

“Are you the legal owner and trust beneficiary of this property?”

Andrew laughed.

“She is my wife.”

The officer looked at him.

May you like

“That was not the question.”
