Patricia did not kneel until the officers told Andrew to leave.
That was when pride became panic.
“Wait,” she said.
Her voice cracked.
“You cannot just put us outside.”
Lillian looked at her.
“You tried to put me outside.”
“That was different.”
“How?”
Patricia opened her mouth.
No answer came.
Because the only honest answer was power.
Patricia had thought she had it.
Now she did not.
Andrew tried to step around the officer.
“Lillian, we can talk inside.”
“No.”
“Don’t humiliate me in front of everyone.”
She looked at the broken plates under his shoes.
“You began this in front of everyone.”
He lowered his voice.
“I was angry.”
“You were certain.”
That stopped him.
Because certainty was the truth.
He had not lost control.
He had revealed what he believed control entitled him to do.
The officer turned to Andrew.
“Sir, gather essential personal items under supervision.”
Andrew looked at the mansion.
His mansion.
No.
Not his.
That correction finally reached his face.
Patricia dropped to her knees near the rose petals.
“Lillian, please.”
“You cannot throw us out.”
Lillian adjusted the baby carrier and looked down at her mother-in-law.
For years, she had imagined Patricia begging would feel satisfying.
It did not.
It felt tired.
“Patricia, you are not being thrown out of your home.”
“You are being removed from mine.”
Patricia began to cry.
“You’ll destroy Andrew.”
“No.”
“I am done preventing him from meeting himself.”
The officer escorted Andrew toward the entrance.
He looked back at Lillian.
His voice shook now.
“Where am I supposed to go?”
Lillian almost answered with all the practical options she had once arranged for him.
The hotel account.
The guest condo.
The office apartment.
The emergency fund.
Then she stopped.
That had been the old Lillian.
The one who softened every landing so no one blamed her for the fall.
She looked at him and said, “Somewhere you own.”
The guests were silent.
Andrew’s face collapsed.
