PART 6

The officer read the documents twice.

That was what broke Andrew’s confidence.

Not Lillian’s voice.

Not Clara’s call.

Not even the police arriving.

The paperwork.

The officer looked from the tablet to Andrew.

“Sir, you are not listed as owner, trustee, beneficiary, or authorized controller of this property.”

Andrew’s face tightened.

“I live here.”

The officer nodded.

“That may be relevant to residency.”

“It does not give you the authority to remove the legal owner or her child.”

Patricia stepped forward.

“She is being emotional.”

The second officer turned to her.

“Ma’am, step back.”

Patricia looked offended.

“I am his mother.”

“And this is not your property either.”

The words hit her like cold water.

Lillian watched Patricia absorb them.

Not understand them.

Absorb them.

Patricia had built her entire performance on assumed future ownership.

Now a uniformed stranger had said the thing no one in the house had dared say plainly.

You do not belong to the deed.

Andrew pointed at Lillian.

“She threatened my family.”

The first officer looked at the broken plates.

“Did she break these?”

Andrew hesitated.

The guests did not.

Someone whispered, “He did.”

Another voice said, “We saw him.”

Patricia spun toward them.

“Be quiet.”

That only made the officers look at her more carefully.

The baby whimpered.

Lillian bounced him gently.

Her voice stayed soft.

“You’re okay.”

Andrew looked at the baby.

Then at her.

“Give me my son.”

Lillian went still.

The officer stepped between them.

“Sir, do not approach her or the child.”

Andrew’s face burned.

“This is ridiculous.”

Clara’s voice came through Lillian’s phone on speaker.

“Officer, Lillian Mercer has revoked non-essential residence access under the trust’s domestic safety clause.”

Andrew’s head snapped toward the phone.

“You can’t do that.”

Clara answered calmly.

“She already did.”

Patricia’s knees weakened.

She grabbed the edge of the patio table.

“What does that mean?”

Clara said, “It means Mrs. Mercer may remain.”

“Mr. Mercer and any guests acting against her interest may be removed pending court review.”

Andrew stared at Lillian.

“You planned this.”

Lillian’s eyes filled, but her voice stayed steady.

“No.”

May you like

“I hoped I would never need it.”
