Chapter 10 - the names that were never supposed to survive

The participant registry appeared online at 3:12 a.m.

Not publicly.

On a private server Daniel had created during his investigation.

Someone uploaded it using Anna’s credentials.

Daniel smiled weakly when Clara showed him.

“She found it.”

“Anna?”

“Or Rebecca.”

The registry contained forty-three names.

Officially, the original VX-41 trial had enrolled twelve adult patients.

The other thirty-one had never appeared in regulatory filings.

Some were employees.

Some hospital patients.

Seven were minors at the time of dosing.

Clara felt sick.

“This wasn’t a failed trial.”

Paul nodded.

“It was an illegal expansion.”

“Who authorized it?”

The registry used codes rather than signatures.

H.W.

Henry Whitmore seemed obvious.

E.W.

Eleanor.

P.M.

Paul Mason.

Paul stared at his initials.

“I did not authorize these.”

“Again, your credentials.”

“Yes.”

Richard’s initials appeared too.

He would have been nineteen during the earliest entries.

“I wasn’t even employed here.”

Someone had been building false attribution for decades.

Daniel pointed to one code repeatedly appearing beside dose approvals.

R.W.

Richard frowned.

“No R.W. executive existed.”

Eleanor looked toward the list.

Her face changed.

Clara saw.

“You know.”

Eleanor whispered:

“Rebecca Whitmore.”

Everyone turned.

Rebecca’s own initials appeared on the illegal trial registry.

“Was she involved?” Maya asked.

Eleanor nodded.

“At first.”

Richard looked betrayed again.

“Our sister experimented on people?”

“She believed the early low-dose protocols were safe.”

“Were they?”

“No.”

“So Rebecca wasn’t just a whistleblower.”

“No.”

She had helped build the program before turning against it.

Again, the story refused simple heroes.

Paul confirmed.

“Rebecca was brilliant. Ambitious. She believed VX-41 could revolutionize trauma medicine.”

“What changed?” Clara asked.

“One patient.”

Participant 17.

A seventeen-year-old boy.

No legal name.

Only:

SUBJECT J-17.

SEVERE EVENT.

TRANSFERRED.

NO FOLLOW-UP.

Rebecca discovered that Henry had approved a much larger dose without consent.

The boy survived initially.

Then vanished.

“Rebecca tried to find him,” Paul said.

“That was when she turned against the program.”

Clara searched the later ledger.

J-17 appeared again.

Twenty years later.

STATUS UNKNOWN.

Then, only six months ago:

J-17 LOCATED.

Clara looked at Daniel.

“You found him.”

Daniel nodded.

“Who is he?”

Daniel stared at Richard.

Richard frowned.

“What?”

Daniel whispered:

“Not who.”

“What do you mean?”

“Where.”

J-17 was not merely a forgotten patient.

He had become someone embedded inside the Whitmore organization.

Daniel had traced him through an old medical identifier.

The identity now belonged to:

Marcus Reed.

Head of executive security.

Eleanor’s second-in-command.

The man responsible for company surveillance, access logs, message filters, cameras, and internal digital identities.

Everything that had been manipulated.

Eleanor stared at the name.

“No.”

“You hired him,” Maya said.

“Twelve years ago.”

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Rebecca?”

“No.”

“Daniel?”

He nodded.

“I found…last month.”

Clara understood.

Daniel discovered that the first major victim of VX-41 had spent years controlling the family’s security infrastructure.

Then Daniel was poisoned.

Motive finally had a face.

Police moved toward Marcus Reed’s home.

Empty.

Office.

Empty.

Bank accounts frozen hours earlier.

He had vanished.

But his workstation contained the security archive.

Deleted files were restored.

One showed Daniel entering the company parking garage the night before his accident.

Marcus followed.

Another showed Marcus meeting Anna.

Another showed Rebecca.

Marcus knew everyone.

At first, the sequence seemed damning.

Then Maya opened the audio from Daniel and Marcus’s last meeting.

Daniel’s voice:

“I know what my father did to you.”

Marcus:

“Your father is dead.”

Daniel:

“The people who continued it aren’t.”

Marcus:

“Then stop looking before they make you another patient.”

Daniel:

“Who?”

Long silence.

Marcus answered:

“The person who brought me back into this company.”

Daniel:

“My mother?”

Marcus laughed.

“No.”

“Richard?”

“No.”

“Paul?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Marcus leaned toward the hidden recorder.

“The person who supposedly died with your father.”

Clara stared.

Henry Whitmore had died in a private plane crash nine years earlier.

One other passenger was listed.

His chief legal officer.

Margaret Vale.

Both presumed dead.

Bodies never recovered.

Richard looked at the screen.

“I remember her.”

Eleanor became rigid.

Maya asked:

“Who was Margaret Vale?”

Eleanor’s voice turned almost inaudible.

“My sister.”

Clara stared.

Rebecca’s aunt.

Richard and Daniel’s aunt.

A woman the family had erased almost as completely as Rebecca.

And if Marcus was telling the truth, she might still be alive.

👉 Daniel’s investigation led beyond Rebecca and Eleanor to a third Whitmore woman—one officially dead for nine years who may have been controlling the family from the shadows.
