Chapter 5 - the woman scratched from the photograph

Clara had seen the necklace before.
A silver oval pendant surrounded by tiny blue stones.
Eleanor wore it at Christmas.
At Daniel and Clara’s wedding.
At Lily’s baptism.
And at the funeral.
But the photograph from the VX-41 trial was more than twenty years old.
The woman wearing the pendant was younger than Eleanor.
Her face had been scratched away.
Detective Grant photographed the image and sent it to forensic restoration.
Richard saw the original later that evening.
His reaction was immediate.
“Where did you get this?”
“Your father’s lake house.”
He stared at the ruined face.
“You know her,” Clara said.
Richard nodded.
“Rebecca.”
“Rebecca who?”
“Rebecca Whitmore.”
Clara frowned.
“There’s no Rebecca Whitmore in your family.”
“There was.”
Richard sat down.
“Our sister.”
Clara felt the story shift again.
Daniel had never mentioned a sister.
Not once.
“What happened to her?”
Richard looked toward Daniel’s ICU room.
“She died.”
“When?”
“Twenty-one years ago.”
“How?”
“Drug trial accident.”
Clara stared at the photograph.
“VX-41.”
“Yes.”
Paul entered the room at exactly the wrong moment.
He saw Rebecca’s picture.
His face went pale.
Clara turned.
“You knew her too.”
Paul nodded.
“She was the first serious adverse event.”
Richard corrected him.
“She was the first death.”
Paul closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Rebecca had been twenty-four.
A graduate researcher working inside Whitmore Biomedical.
VX-41 was still experimental.
According to the official report, she accidentally entered a restricted testing room and was exposed to a dangerous dose.
The program was suspended afterward.
“What really happened?” Maya asked.
Richard did not know.
Paul claimed he had been a junior investigator.
“Rebecca volunteered for a micro-dose under supervision.”
“And?”
“Her vital signs collapsed.”
“Did you pronounce her dead?”
Paul’s expression tightened.
“No.”
Clara felt a chill.
“Who did?”
Paul looked at her.
“Henry Whitmore.”
Daniel and Richard’s father.
“He wasn’t a doctor.”
“No.”
“Then how?”
“Company physicians signed what Henry told them to sign.”
History was repeating itself.
Daniel’s false death.
Rebecca’s death.
Forged or coerced medical records.
“Was Rebecca buried?” Clara asked.
Richard nodded.
“Closed coffin.”
Nobody spoke.
Lily’s cry at Daniel’s coffin echoed in Clara’s memory.
Daddy’s in there.
“What funeral home?” Maya asked.
Richard looked disturbed by the question.
“Same family-owned chapel.”
The room became silent.
The chapel where Daniel had almost been buried alive had also handled Rebecca’s funeral.
Detective Grant ordered records from twenty-one years earlier.
Most had been destroyed according to retention policy.
One handwritten ledger remained.
REBECCA WHITMORE.
NO EMBALMING.
PRIVATE FAMILY VIEWING.
EXPEDITED BURIAL.
Clara looked at Richard.
“Who requested no embalming?”
He swallowed.
“My mother.”
The same instruction Eleanor gave for Daniel.
Maya leaned forward.
“Was Eleanor present when Rebecca died?”
“Yes.”
“Did they get along?”
Richard’s answer was slow.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Rebecca wanted the trial shut down.”
There it was.
A motive.
Not yet proof.
Clara returned to Daniel.
He was more alert.
She showed him the restored photograph.
Tears appeared in his eyes.
“You knew about Rebecca.”
He nodded.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Promise.”
“To whom?”
“Mother.”
Clara’s heart tightened.
“What did she make you promise?”
Daniel struggled.
“Never…look.”
“At Rebecca’s death?”
He nodded.
“Then why did you start looking?”
His gaze moved toward Lily’s photograph beside the bed.
“Because…same batch.”
Clara leaned closer.
“What same batch?”
“Hospital.”
His breathing became strained.
Paul told him to stop talking.
Daniel caught Clara’s wrist.
“Rebecca…”
He forced out the next words.
“Didn’t die.”
Everyone froze.
Richard stared through the glass.
“What?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“She woke.”
“When?” Clara whispered.
“Coffin.”
Paul stepped backward.
His face had gone white.
“You knew?”
Daniel nodded faintly.
Clara turned on Paul.
“Did Rebecca wake inside her coffin too?”
Paul looked as if he had spent twenty-one years dreading the question.
“Yes.”
Richard grabbed the wall.
“What happened to her?”
Paul’s silence became unbearable.
“Where is our sister?” Richard demanded.
Paul whispered:
“I don’t know.”
Then Daniel shook his head.
He knew more.
Clara bent close.
Daniel opened his eyes.
May you like
“Mother does.”
👉 Daniel revealed that Rebecca had survived the same false-death nightmare decades earlier—and Eleanor had apparently known what happened to her afterward.
