Chapter 13 - the exchange

Rebecca agreed to go.

Everyone else said no.

“She wants me.”

“She wants the antidote,” Paul said.

“Then give it to me.”

“No.”

Rebecca turned on him.

“My daughter is in that room because of a program I helped build.”

“And walking into Margaret’s custody won’t erase that.”

“No.”

Rebecca’s eyes filled.

“But leaving Anna there guarantees she pays for it.”

Detective Grant proposed a controlled exchange.

Tracking.

Surveillance.

Tactical teams.

Rebecca agreed.

Paul prepared documents describing the original reversal compound, but not the active formulation.

Margaret would recognize a fake.

So Paul included part of the genuine data.

Enough to convince her.

Not enough to manufacture it.

The meeting location arrived at sunset.

An abandoned Whitmore Biomedical research annex near the James River.

The same site where Rebecca had participated in early VX-41 work.

The symbolism was deliberate.

Richard wanted to go.

Police refused.

Daniel wanted to go.

Clara nearly laughed.

“You just came back from your own funeral.”

“I can help.”

“You can recover.”

For once, he listened.

Clara remained at the hospital with Daniel and Lily while watching the operation through secure updates.

Rebecca entered the annex carrying the formula drive.

Margaret appeared behind a glass partition.

She was seventy-two.

White hair.

Elegant black suit.

No disguise.

No apology.

Rebecca stared at her aunt.

“You killed Father.”

Margaret smiled faintly.

“Henry died in a plane crash.”

“You survived it.”

“Yes.”

“Did he?”

“For several minutes.”

The phrase struck Rebecca.

Another false death?

No.

Margaret clarified.

“He was alive after impact. I chose not to save him.”

Rebecca stared.

“Why?”

“Because he was going to expose everything to save himself.”

Margaret spoke as if discussing a contract.

“Your father created catastrophe and then discovered morality when prison became possible.”

“You’re no better.”

“I’m more honest.”

“Where is Anna?”

Margaret pressed a button.

The lights came on behind another window.

Anna sat restrained in a medical chair.

Marcus appeared on a monitor from federal custody, watching remotely under supervision.

He nearly broke when he saw his daughter.

Rebecca stepped closer.

“Let her go.”

“Formula.”

Rebecca held up the drive.

“Anna first.”

Margaret laughed.

“You are still Henry’s daughter.”

“No.”

Rebecca’s voice became cold.

“I’m the daughter who survived him.”

Outside, tactical officers positioned themselves.

Then Margaret said something that changed the operation.

“You brought police.”

Rebecca froze.

Margaret looked toward a hidden camera.

“Hello, Detective Grant.”

Maya realized their encrypted surveillance had been penetrated.

“How?” an agent whispered.

Margaret had designed Whitmore security architecture decades earlier.

She knew its descendants.

The annex doors locked.

Emergency shutters closed.

Rebecca was trapped.

Margaret approached Anna.

Paul shouted through the remote channel:

“Don’t inject anything!”

Margaret smiled toward the camera.

“I don’t need to.”

She held up a vial.

“Daniel already proved the current batch.”

Clara stared at the hospital screen.

“What?”

Margaret continued:

“The dose Daniel received was not intended to kill him.”

Paul looked horrified.

“It was a tolerance test.”

“Exactly.”

Clara felt sick.

Daniel’s funeral had not been the goal.

It had been collateral chaos after the dose pushed him farther than expected.

“Then who declared him dead?” Rebecca asked.

Margaret’s expression hardened.

“An employee who panicked.”

“Who?”

“She is no longer relevant.”

“But the funeral?”

“Eleanor accelerated it.”

Eleanor, watching from police headquarters, closed her eyes.

Margaret smiled.

“My sister unknowingly protected my evidence.”

Clara looked at Daniel.

“You were an experiment.”

Again.

Margaret turned toward Anna.

“And now we finish the family comparison.”

Rebecca moved.

She threw the drive against the glass.

Margaret flinched.

Anna kicked the medical cart into her aunt’s knees.

Tactical teams breached the outer door.

Chaos erupted.

Margaret escaped through a hidden service corridor.

Rebecca freed Anna.

No injection occurred.

The operation saved her.

But Margaret vanished with the vial.

And during the escape, another file automatically uploaded from the annex.

SUBJECT COMPARISON:

DANIEL — SURVIVED.

ANNA — PENDING.

LILY — OPTIMAL.

Clara stared at her daughter sleeping beside Daniel.

Margaret had not chosen Anna as the final candidate.

May you like

She had always wanted Lily.

👉 Anna was rescued before the experiment could be repeated, but Margaret’s own files revealed two-year-old Lily was the real end point of the entire VX-41 program.
