Chapter 10

Lorenzo’s criminal identity was not revealed.
No one invited Maya anywhere.
No second location appeared.
No final resolution came.
The confrontation remained on the sunlit Central Park walkway, surrounded by green trees, bright afternoon light, cautious pedestrians, and three black-suited security men holding a disciplined perimeter without touching anyone.
Matteo stood between Lorenzo Vitale and Maya Bennett, one small hand clutching his father’s sleeve and the other still wrapped around Maya’s fingers.
His tears had slowed.
His breathing had steadied.
But every time a stranger moved too quickly nearby, his shoulders jumped.
Lorenzo noticed each flinch.
So did Maya.
That shared attention created a silence neither of them named.
Lorenzo stood in his perfectly tailored black suit, dark hair shifting slightly in the breeze, face controlled again but no longer unreadable to her.
Maya saw the father beneath the power.
She also saw the danger around him.
Maya remained in her blush-pink dress, hair loosened from its elegant updo, expression gentle toward Matteo and wary toward everyone else.
She had helped a lost boy because he was crying.
Now the boy’s father stood before her with bodyguards, unanswered questions, and a name that made strangers whisper.
Adrian returned to Lorenzo’s side but said nothing.
The other security men watched the paths.
Somewhere beyond the trees, the gray man was gone.
Or waiting.
No one said which.
Lorenzo looked at Matteo’s hand in Maya’s.
“You can let her go now,” he said softly.
Matteo shook his head.
Maya crouched just enough to meet the child’s eyes.
“I’m right here for this moment,” she whispered.
Matteo nodded, but did not release her.
Lorenzo watched them, suspicion and gratitude slowly becoming something more complicated.
“Who are you?” he asked again, quieter this time.
Maya looked up at him.
“Maya Bennett. He was alone.”
The answer had not changed.
But now Lorenzo understood it differently.
She was not explaining herself.
She was reminding him what mattered.
Matteo pulled both of their hands closer together.
Lorenzo’s guarded expression softened by a fraction.
Maya held his gaze.

The park continued around them.
But inside that small circle, nothing felt ordinary anymore.
