Chapter 5

Lorenzo did not answer the call.
He silenced it and slipped the phone back into his jacket.
Maya watched the movement.
Smooth.
Controlled.
Too practiced.
“Someone important?” she asked.
His eyes lifted.
“My son is important.”
“That is not what I asked.”
“No,” he said. “It is what matters.”
Maya had no argument for that.
Matteo leaned toward her again, still in Lorenzo’s arms, refusing to release her hand. His tears had slowed, but every time a stranger moved too quickly nearby, his body tensed.
Maya brushed her thumb lightly over his knuckles.
“Breathe with me,” she said.
She inhaled slowly.
Matteo copied her.
Lorenzo watched the small ritual with an expression that looked almost painful.
“You work with children?”
“No.”
“You have one?”
“No.”
“Then how did you know what to do?”
Maya looked at Matteo before answering.
“People think frightened children need instructions. Usually they need one safe thing that doesn’t move.”
Lorenzo’s gaze stayed on her.
“And you decided to become that.”
“He was alone.”
She had already said it once, but this time the words landed deeper.
Lorenzo looked away.
Only briefly.
But Maya saw guilt move through him.
Not ordinary parental guilt.
Something heavier.
A second security man returned from the path and leaned close to Adrian, speaking too low for Maya to catch. Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Lorenzo saw the exchange.
“Say it.”
The guard hesitated.
“Lost visual south gate. Description matched a man leaving fast. We’re checking cameras.”
Maya’s mouth went dry.
Matteo heard enough to understand tone, not content.
“Papa?”
Lorenzo immediately softened his face.
“Nothing for you to worry about.”
Maya did not like that.
Not because she thought a five-year-old needed details.
Because she knew children could feel lies even when they did not understand them.
Matteo looked at Maya instead.
That hurt Lorenzo.
She saw it.
It also humbled him.
His son, terrified, looked to a stranger to decide whether the world was safe.
Maya said gently, “Your papa is here now. That part is true.”
Lorenzo’s eyes moved to her sharply.
That part.
She had chosen the words carefully.
He understood.
She would comfort Matteo.
She would not help him lie.
For the first time, Lorenzo looked at her not only with gratitude or suspicion.

He looked at her with respect.
