Chapter 2

Maya did not pull her hand away.
That was the first thing Lorenzo noticed.
Most people changed when surrounded by men like his security team.
Their voices rose or disappeared. Their bodies folded smaller. Their eyes moved from face to face, trying to calculate danger. Some became defensive. Some became eager to explain. Some became suddenly very polite.
Maya Bennett did none of those things.
She stood with one hand trapped in Matteo’s small fingers, shoulders straight, blush-pink floral dress moving lightly in the afternoon breeze, chestnut-brown hair pinned in a loose updo that had begun to fall at the edges.
She was afraid.
Lorenzo could see that.
But she was not acting from fear.
That distinction mattered.
Matteo pressed his face against Lorenzo’s shoulder but kept hold of Maya’s hand as if releasing her might make the world tilt again.
“Papa,” he whispered, voice cracking.
“I have you,” Lorenzo said, low and controlled.
His Italian accent was faint beneath polished American English, but the tenderness was not hidden.
Maya watched the change in him carefully.
This was not the same man the crowd reacted to.
The pedestrians saw a powerful stranger with black-suited protection.
Maya saw a father checking whether his child was breathing normally.
One security man leaned closer.
“Sir, we should move.”
Lorenzo did not look away from Maya.
“Not yet.”
The guard stepped back instantly.
Maya noticed that too.
Not asked.
Obeyed.
Matteo rubbed his wet cheek against his father’s lapel.
“She helped me,” he mumbled.
Lorenzo’s expression shifted again.
“Did she?”
Matteo nodded fiercely.
“She spoke like Nonna.”
Maya’s face softened despite the tension.
“I only know a little.”
Lorenzo studied her.
“That was not a little.”
Maya did not answer.
A small crowd had formed around them now, but no one came too close. The security team created distance without touching anyone, using posture alone. The park continued beyond them—sunlit trees, joggers slowing, pigeons scattering near the path—but the small space around Maya, Matteo, and Lorenzo felt sealed.
Lorenzo looked toward his men.
“Where was he found?”
One guard answered, “East side path, sir. Near the musicians.”
Maya interrupted before she could stop herself.
“He was not found by them. He found me.”
All three guards looked at her.
Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed slightly.
Not anger.
Attention.
Maya held his gaze.
“He was crying behind the bench. Nobody with him. Nobody calling his name.”
Matteo’s hand tightened around hers.
Lorenzo looked at the child.
Then back at Maya.
His voice lowered.
May you like
“Tell me exactly what happened.”
