Chapter 2 - The Nurse Everyone Ignored

Clara’s scalp burned where Hemlock’s fingers had twisted into her hair.
She did not touch it.
She did not step away.
The suction tube was still in her hand, and Roman’s monitor was still unstable.
That mattered more.
Her tears blurred the numbers on the screen, but her hands remembered what to do. She braced herself against the gurney, kept the tube angled correctly, and forced air into her lungs through the humiliation stuck in her throat.
Hemlock had released her, but the room still held the shape of his violence.
The other nurses stood frozen around the trauma bay, their faces stretched with fear and shock. One had both hands hovering above an instrument tray. Another pressed herself against the supply cart as if afraid to breathe too loudly. The third stared at Clara’s ponytail, eyes shining with guilt because she had seen everything and done nothing.
Clara did not blame them.
Not fully.
Everyone at that hospital knew Arthur Hemlock.
Chief trauma surgeon.
Donor favorite.
Board-protected.
A man who wore his silver wristwatch into crisis rooms as if time itself worked for him.
He had ruined careers for less than a mistake.
A nurse reassigned.
A resident humiliated until he quit.
A technician blamed for missing equipment Hemlock himself had demanded and then forgotten.
He did not shout because he lost control.
He shouted because people moved faster when they feared him.
But Roman Moretti did not move faster.
He did not even sit up.
He lay wounded on the gurney, tattooed chest tight under bandages, oxygen mask shifted beside his mouth, gray eyes fixed on Hemlock with chilling steadiness.
He looked less like a man fighting to survive and more like a man memorizing debt.
Leo understood first.
The huge bodyguard near the double doors did not speak.
He did not threaten.
He only straightened, shoulders rolling once beneath his black suit, gaze dropping from Hemlock’s face to the hand that had grabbed Clara’s hair.
Then to the silver watch.
Hemlock saw the look.
His contemptuous smirk twitched.
Clara saw it too.
She saw the first crack in the man everyone feared.
Roman’s voice was weak when he spoke again, but the weakness did nothing to soften it.
“Let her work.”
No dialogue line from the prompt? We should avoid adding spoken? Hmm story can have more dialogue maybe okay. But user wanted video; story can include. We can include more but maybe should preserve lock? The final story can have dialogues. Good.
Hemlock swallowed.
He turned back toward the procedure, but his hands were not as steady now.
Clara stepped into position again.
This time, when her shoulder came near Hemlock’s field, he did not touch her.
Roman watched everything.
The monitor screamed again.
Clara moved faster.
Her humiliation had not disappeared.

It had changed direction.
