Chapter 9 - Remember His Hands

Leo stood in the doorway like a verdict delayed.
Clara could not stop hearing Roman’s whisper.
Leo… remember his hands.
Not hurt him.
Not stop him.
Not now.
Remember.
That word was worse than an immediate threat.
It stretched forward into a future the video did not reveal, a future Hemlock could imagine but not control.
The doctor imagined it too.
His arrogant face had collapsed into pale calculation. He kept working because Roman still needed treatment, because stopping now would make him look guilty and incompetent, because every nurse in the room was watching him with newly opened eyes.
But fear had entered him.
It changed the way he breathed.
It changed the way he held instruments.
It changed how far he stood from Clara.
Roman saw all of it.
Clara did too.
The strange thing was that her own fear had not disappeared.
It had multiplied.
She was afraid of Hemlock.
Afraid of Roman.
Afraid of Leo.
Afraid of what the hospital would say if she reported this.
Afraid of what would happen if she did not.
But beneath those fears, something else had begun.
Defiance.
Thin.
Shaking.
Real.
Hemlock had pulled her hair to make her small.
Instead, the whole room had seen him.
Clara stepped closer to the gurney to adjust the suction tube placement.
Hemlock moved slightly away without being asked.
That was the first apology she would ever get from him.
It was not enough.
It mattered anyway.
Roman’s hand lifted weakly.
Two fingers extended toward Clara again.
This time, he did not touch her.
He pointed toward the tube, then the monitor, giving her attention back to the work.
He was telling her something without words.
Do not look at him.
Do not look at Leo.
Do not look at the doctor.
Save me.
Clara nodded.
She worked.
The monitor responded.
The alarm softened further.
Hemlock looked from the numbers to Clara.
Then to Roman.
Then to Leo.
For the first time in his own trauma bay, Arthur Hemlock looked like a man surrounded.
Not by police.
Not by administrators.
By witnesses.
By memory.
By a patient who should have been helpless and was not.
Clara’s tears dried cold on her face.
Her scalp throbbed.
Her hands steadied.
Roman watched Hemlock over the oxygen mask.
Leo’s shadow stretched longer.
The procedure continued.
The outcome remained unknown.

But Hemlock’s world had already changed.
