Chapter 7 - The Room Learns to Breathe

The trauma bay began breathing again before anyone admitted it.
A nurse moved to Roman’s left side.
Another checked the IV.
The third prepared additional supplies.
Small actions.
Necessary actions.
Actions that should have happened sooner.
Clara felt the shift as if someone had opened a window in a locked room.
Hemlock was still chief surgeon.
Still wearing the coat.
Still officially in charge.
But his cruelty no longer filled every corner.
Roman’s stare had cut space around Clara.
Enough for her to work.
Enough for others to move.
Not safety.
Not justice.
But space.
The monitor’s alarm softened into a steadier pattern.
Hemlock snapped, “Do not relax. He is not stable.”
Clara wanted to say no one was relaxing.
Instead, she said, “Airway cleared.”
Her voice was stronger this time.
Hemlock looked at her sharply.
She expected another insult.
His mouth opened.
Then his eyes flicked to Leo.
He closed it.
That silence felt like a hand releasing her throat.
Roman noticed.
Of course he did.
His gaze moved from Hemlock to Clara, then briefly to the suction tube still in her hand.
She realized she was gripping it so hard her knuckles hurt.
She loosened her fingers.
Roman’s eyes softened by one degree.
Only one.
Enough to make her uncomfortable.
She did not know this man.
She did not know what power followed him.
She did not know why Leo obeyed silence better than most people obeyed shouted orders.
But she knew Roman had used whatever strength he had left to stop Hemlock’s hand.
That truth sat beside every warning in her mind.
Hemlock adjusted his watch again.
This time, Roman’s eyes lowered to it with unmistakable focus.
The doctor stopped.
Clara almost laughed.
Hysterical, terrified laughter rose in her chest and died before it escaped.
The absurdity of it.
A surgeon afraid of his own wrist.
A wounded man commanding the room from a gurney.
A shy nurse standing straighter because the monster who grabbed her hair had learned he was being watched by something worse.
The double doors remained open.
Beyond them, the hallway glowed blue and empty.
No police.
No administrators.
No final consequence.
Only the present moment.
Hemlock whispered under his breath, “This is my room.”
Roman heard him.
His eyes did not blink.
May you like
Not anymore.
