Chapter 8 - The Patient Who Would Not Look Away

Roman should have been unconscious.

Clara knew that better than anyone.

His body had endured enough trauma to pull most patients under. The oxygen support, bandages, leads, and careful monitoring all said the same thing: this was not a man who should be holding anyone accountable in real time.

Yet his eyes remained open.

Gray.

Cold.

Unblinking.

Every time Hemlock moved too close to Clara, Roman saw.

Every time Hemlock’s hand twitched, Roman saw.

Every time Leo shifted weight by the door, Roman knew without turning his head fully.

It was terrifying.

It was also impossible not to trust in that moment.

Clara hated the contradiction.

Hemlock’s voice became clipped and professional, the tone he used when observers stood nearby.

“Continue suction as needed.”

Clara nodded.

He did not say please.

He did not apologize.

But he did not touch her.

That was what passed for victory under hospital lights.

One nurse’s hands shook as she changed a bag.

Another wiped tears from her cheek with her shoulder.

The third finally looked Clara in the eye.

A silent apology.

Clara accepted it silently because there was no room for anything else.

Roman’s hand tightened around the gurney rail again.

His tattoos moved with the strain in his arm.

Hemlock noticed.

“Stop exerting yourself.”

Roman slowly turned his eyes to him.

The doctor swallowed.

Leo took half a step.

Roman’s fingers lifted from the rail.

Leo stopped.

Again.

The room understood the pattern now.

Roman did not need violence.

He needed timing.

Clara checked the monitor.

“Pressure improving.”

Hemlock looked like he wanted to claim the success.

But Roman’s eyes shifted to Clara first.

The room followed the gaze.

Everyone knew whose warning had prevented the delay.

Everyone knew whose hands had stayed steady after being assaulted.

Hemlock’s face flushed with humiliation.

That humiliation made him dangerous again.

Clara saw his jaw grind.

His nostrils flared.

His shoulders rose.

He wanted to explode.

But Leo’s shadow remained across the floor.

Roman’s gaze remained locked on him.

The silver watch caught the surgical light, flashing once like a signal.

Hemlock covered it with his other hand.

A mistake.

It made him look afraid of his own body.

Roman replaced the oxygen mask fully.

His breathing slowed.

But his eyes did not leave Hemlock’s.

Clara felt the suspense become physical, pressing against her ribs.

Something was going to happen later.

Not here.

Not now.

But the room knew a debt had been recorded.
