Chapter 1 - The Bride Raises Her Glass

A bride publicly announces she is taking her mother in law’s ranch, but live gate footage exposes her family’s break in and instantly destroys her confidence.
Marisol rose from her chair before the dessert plates arrived.
Her white lace gown shimmered beneath the chandeliers, her veil falling perfectly behind her shoulders, her jeweled hairpiece sparkling as two hundred guests turned toward her.
She lifted a champagne glass and struck it with a spoon.
The sound rang through the Dallas wedding estate ballroom like a tiny bell before a public execution.
Daniel’s uneasy smile disappeared.
Across the room, Clara Vega sat alone in a fitted black dress, silver-gray hair smooth in a low bun, hands resting over her black clutch.
She did not move.
Marisol pointed directly at her.
“After today, Clara moves into a cheap little apartment.”
The guests laughed.
Not all of them kindly.
Elena, Marisol’s mother, leaned across the table in a champagne-colored gown and waved one dismissive hand toward Clara.
“One bedroom, third floor, and no elevator.”
More laughter erupted.
Daniel stepped toward his mother, one hand stretched out, face twisted with shame, but his eyes never met hers.
“Mom, we only want to simplify your life.”
Clara looked at him.
Only at him.
Her son’s wedding ring caught the chandelier light as Marisol gripped his arm possessively.
Then Clara’s phone vibrated inside her clutch.
She opened it beneath the table.
A live security feed appeared.
Four trucks at her ranch gate.
Four men in dark work jackets.
Bolt cutters snapping around the chain.
Clara’s expression changed.
Not into fear.
Into command.
She stood so suddenly her chair crashed backward.
The ballroom laughter died.
She walked to the dance floor, lifted her phone toward the projection system, and pressed one control.
“Before you celebrate, play the video.”
The screen came alive.
A grainy ranch gate appeared.
A man’s voice crackled through the ballroom.
“Cut the chain. Marisol says the ranch belongs to Daniel now.”

Marisol’s champagne glass shattered on the floor.
