Chapter 9 - The Bride in the Broken Glass

Marisol’s shattered champagne glass lay across the ballroom floor.
Its fragments reflected pieces of her face.
White veil.
Trembling lips.
Mascara-darkened eyes stretched wide with terror.
She looked down and saw herself broken into angles.
For one second, she seemed to forget the guests were watching.
Then she looked up at Daniel.
He had stepped away from her.
Not far.
Enough.
A distance opened between bride and groom on the very night they were supposed to become one.
“Daniel,” she whispered.
He looked at her as if he no longer knew which version had walked down the aisle.
The bride who smiled at him.
The woman who laughed at his mother.
The person whose name had just been spoken at a ranch gate by men cutting chains.
Clara stood under the projection screen, composed in black.
Behind her, the grainy footage held the entire room hostage.
The headlights brightened again.
One Rivas brother backed farther away.
Another pointed toward the unseen source.
The live audio crackled, then cut into static for one second.
Everyone recoiled.
The screen flickered but did not go black.
Marisol covered her mouth.
Elena whispered her daughter’s name.
Clara’s eyes narrowed.
That interruption mattered.
But the video would not reveal what caused it.
Not yet.
Daniel turned toward Clara.
“Mom… what stops them?”
Clara looked at him.
For the first time that night, sadness crossed her face.
“You thought I needed you to.”
Daniel flinched.
No final retaliation.
No documents.
No answer.
