Chapter 5 - The Guests Become Witnesses

Two hundred guests had entered the ballroom expecting spectacle.
They got one.
Just not the kind printed on invitations.
The projection screen glowed over the dance floor, bathing Marisol’s white dress in grainy security light.
Every table turned toward it.
Some guests leaned forward with their mouths open.
Some clutched champagne glasses against their chests.
Some looked at Clara as if they were only now understanding why she had remained so composed.
A cousin near the front whispered, “Is that the Vega ranch?”
Someone else whispered, “That’s live.”
Daniel heard both.
His shoulders tensed.
Marisol shook her head.
“No one knows what they’re seeing.”
Clara finally smiled.
Faintly.
“Then explain it.”
Marisol looked trapped.
Elena grabbed her daughter’s wrist.
“Do not answer.”
The command was too loud.
Everyone heard.
Daniel’s eyes snapped to Elena.
Clara stayed silent.
That silence became pressure.
On the screen, one Rivas brother lifted a new lock from the truck bed.
Another used bolt cutters on the second chain.
Their faces remained partly obscured.
Their movements were urgent.
Confident.
Like men who had been promised no one important would stop them.
Daniel’s hand moved toward his wedding ring.
He twisted it once.
Marisol saw.
“Don’t you dare look at me like that.”
His face twisted with shame and confusion.
“How should I look at you?”
The question broke her.
For one second, her rage collapsed into terror.
Clara lowered her phone just enough to watch her son, but not enough to interrupt the feed.
She had waited a long time for Daniel to see the difference between love and entitlement.
She did not know whether he would become brave tonight.
May you like
She only knew he had finally become uncertain.
