Chapter 8 - Clara’s Black Clutch

Clara’s black clutch lay on the table where she had left it.

Small.

Elegant.

Unremarkable.

Marisol had not noticed it earlier except as part of Clara’s outdated dignity.

Now everyone near the table looked at it differently.

That was where the phone alert had come from.

That was where Clara had kept the device that turned the wedding against the bride.

Daniel looked at the clutch, then at his mother.

“How long did you know?”

Clara did not answer.

Not directly.

She watched the screen.

“You were supposed to ask before they touched the gate.”

His face folded.

That hurt him more than shouting would have.

Because it was true.

Before the wedding.

Before the speech.

Before letting Marisol mock her.

Daniel could have asked his mother whether she was all right.

Whether the ranch was safe.

Whether Marisol’s sudden confidence about “simplifying” Clara’s life had roots deeper than wedding stress.

He had asked nothing.

Marisol leaned toward him.

“She’s punishing us.”

Clara’s eyes turned cold.

“No, Marisol. I’m letting your plan arrive on time.”

A collective gasp moved through the guests.

Elena’s face twisted.

“You set a trap.”

Clara looked at her.

“I set cameras.”

The distinction humiliated Elena more than an insult.

Because a trap required deception.

A camera required only that someone behave as they intended.

On the screen, the headlights remained bright.

The Rivas brothers stood motionless.

The source stayed unseen.

Marisol stared at the footage as if begging it not to continue.

Clara did not press anything else.

She simply held the phone, and the room waited.
