Chapter 3 - Vanessa Points at the Screen

Vanessa could not tolerate Claire looking composed.
It broke the order of things.
Claire was supposed to cry first.
Apologize second.
Explain herself badly.
Then accept whatever humiliation the family renamed as forgiveness.
Instead, she sat in Miami with ocean light behind her and watched them panic inside a boardroom they had entered expecting control.
Vanessa leaned over the laptop, diamond necklace rattling against her black blazer.
“You think one video call makes you powerful?”
Claire held her gaze.
“No. I think paperwork does.”
Caleb’s face tightened.
Daniel’s mouth moved slightly, not quite a smile.
Vanessa’s nostrils flared.
“You ran away.”
Claire’s fingers tightened around Lily’s hand.
“I left after you told my daughter she should be grateful we were allowed to eat in your kitchen.”
Linda whispered, “Vanessa…”
Vanessa snapped, “What? Are we pretending she didn’t embarrass us?”
Claire looked at her mother.
Linda’s hands shook near her mouth.
Robert stared at the documents, anger and fear fighting across his face.
Caleb flipped faster through the folder.
Loan documents.
Guarantees.
Signatures.
Claire’s name everywhere.
He looked physically sick.
“My company,” he whispered.
Daniel turned to him.
“Your company has relied on backing you publicly credited to yourself.”
Caleb’s jaw dropped.
Robert slammed his fist onto the table.
“That is enough.”
Every water glass jumped.
Claire did not flinch on the laptop.
Lily’s small hand tightened, but Claire gently squeezed back.
The gesture made Robert look worse.
Not stronger.
Vanessa pointed at Claire’s image again.
“You’re still the disgrace.”
Claire’s expression changed.
Not anger.
Final disappointment.
“You keep saying that like it still has value.”
Vanessa’s mouth froze open.
For the first time, she had no sharp answer.
Daniel placed another sealed document near the laptop.
“The revocation notices have already been delivered.”
Robert turned sharply.
“To whom?”
Daniel looked at him.
“To everyone who needed to stop pretending the Mercer family was self-funded.”
Linda made a small, horrified sound.
Claire looked at them through the screen.
“You wanted the world to believe I had nothing.”
She paused.
May you like
“Today it believes you.”
