Chapter 7 - Daniel Mercer’s Final Folder

Daniel’s leather portfolio sat beside the final sealed folder.
Robert kept looking at it.
So did Vanessa.
So did Caleb.
Linda stared at it as if it were a medical diagnosis waiting to be read.
Claire did not look at it at all.
She looked at Lily’s hand.
That told Robert something terrible.
The folder mattered less to Claire than the child they had dismissed.
Daniel rested one hand on the sealed cover.
“This folder is not being opened until Claire confirms the next step.”
Robert lurched forward.
“You work for this family.”
Daniel looked at him.
“No. I represent Claire.”
The correction struck the room hard.
Robert’s face twisted.
“We paid your firm.”
Daniel’s eyes did not move.
“Through accounts guaranteed by Claire.”
Caleb covered his face with both hands.
Vanessa whispered, “Stop saying her name.”
Claire heard it.
Her eyes lifted.
“My name is the only reason this room still matters.”
Vanessa recoiled as if slapped.
Daniel’s hand remained on the folder.
Robert pointed at him.
“What’s in there?”
Daniel said nothing.
Claire leaned closer to the laptop camera.
“Ask yourself why you’re afraid to find out.”
Robert’s mouth opened, then closed.
Because he did not know.
Because that was the terror.
He did not know where Claire’s money began.
He did not know where the guarantees ended.
He did not know who had been protecting which loan, which property, which lifestyle, which business line, which mortgage, which favor.
He had mistaken ignorance for dominance because Claire had allowed him to.
Now permission had ended.
Caleb looked at Claire.
“Did you save my company?”
Claire’s face softened for one second.
Not mercy.
Grief.
“I tried to save my family.”
That answer hurt more.
Vanessa looked down at her jewelry.
Linda cried silently.
Robert’s anger had nowhere to stand.
Daniel slowly lifted the edge of the sealed folder.
Every head moved toward it.
Then he stopped.
Claire had not nodded.

The folder remained unopened.
