Chapter 4 - Caleb Finds Her Name
Caleb had always been the loudest about merit.
He talked about discipline.
Risk.
Vision.
Hustle.
The courage to build something without handouts.
Now his hands shook over documents that carried Claire’s signature beneath the survival of his company.
He tore through another folder.
Then another.
Daniel did not stop him.
He wanted Caleb to see.
Not everything.
Not the full audit.
Not the total fortune.
Just enough.
Caleb’s face went gray.
“She’s on the bridge loan.”
Robert barked, “Don’t say that out loud.”
Caleb looked up at his father.
“She’s on all of them.”
Linda backed away from the table.
Vanessa whispered, “That’s impossible.”
Claire watched silently.
Lily’s small shoulder appeared briefly at the edge of the screen.
Claire shifted, shielding her daughter from the intensity without leaving the call.
Robert saw the movement.
His eyes narrowed.
“So this is revenge.”
Claire’s face went cold.
“No. Revenge would have been letting you fail without warning.”
Daniel lifted one folder.
“She sent notices.”
Robert snapped, “I received no such notices.”
Daniel looked at Linda.
Linda’s face drained.
Robert turned.
“Linda?”
She gripped the back of a chair.
“I thought she was bluffing.”
Claire closed her eyes briefly.
There it was.
A small truth.
Not the whole truth.
But enough to begin.
Vanessa stared at her mother.
“You knew?”
Linda’s lips trembled.
“She was upset. She said things.”
Claire opened her eyes.
“I sent formal notices through counsel.”
Robert’s face reddened.
Linda whispered, “I didn’t think you would do this to your own family.”
Claire leaned toward the laptop.
“You thought I would never stop paying for people who called my daughter a burden.”
The room went still.
Caleb looked away.
Vanessa’s hand rose to her necklace, claws tightening around the diamonds.
Robert’s phone vibrated again.
He looked down.
Another failed payment alert.
Unreadable.
Red.
Urgent.
He placed the phone face down as if that could silence reality.
Daniel slid the sealed folder closer to him.
“The next question is not whether Claire acted.”
Robert stared at the folder.
Daniel’s voice lowered.
