Chapter 8 - Lily’s Hand

Lily had said nothing.

She stayed mostly out of frame, just beside Claire at the Miami beach house, her small fingers wrapped around her mother’s hand.

But the boardroom kept glancing at her.

A child they had treated like excess noise had become the quiet witness to their exposure.

Claire noticed every glance.

She shifted slightly, placing her body more between Lily and the laptop.

Protective.

Automatic.

Robert saw it and tried to use softness.

“Claire, think about your daughter.”

Her expression changed instantly.

“I am.”

Linda sobbed once.

Vanessa looked away.

Caleb stared at the table.

Robert leaned closer, desperate now.

“Destroying your family will damage her too.”

Claire’s eyes sharpened.

“You damaged her when you made her ask why Grandma didn’t want her at dinner.”

Linda covered her face.

Robert’s voice cracked with rage.

“That is not financial relevance.”

Daniel spoke before Claire could.

“It became financial relevance when the family used personal coercion to maintain guarantor support.”

Robert stared at him.

The legal language made the emotional cruelty suddenly sound documented.

Organized.

Expensive.

Vanessa gripped her necklace so hard the diamonds bit into her fingers.

“You can’t blame all of us.”

Claire looked at her.

“I don’t have to blame anyone. You’re doing that yourselves.”

Caleb looked at Vanessa.

She glared back.

Linda looked at Robert.

Robert looked at Daniel.

The family began splitting in silence.

Claire watched.

Not with pleasure.

With exhaustion.

She had not wanted them ruined.

She had wanted them to stop.

Daniel placed one more paper on top of the sealed folder.

No readable text.

Just a single page.

Robert’s breathing changed.

“What is that?”

Daniel answered.

“A summary.”

Robert’s hands shook.

“Of what?”

Daniel looked toward Claire.

She did not answer.

The summary remained face down.

The audit results stayed hidden.

The exact fortune stayed hidden.

But the existence of the summary made every person at the table imagine the worst.
