Chapter 4 - Caroline’s Champagne Glass

Caroline’s champagne glass finally slipped.
Not fully.
Her fingers caught it at the stem, but pale gold liquid splashed over her hand and onto the front of her emerald dress.
She stared down at the stain as if the fabric had betrayed her.
Then she looked at Nathan.
He was still saluting Evelyn.
Still.
Her fiancé.
At her engagement dinner.
In front of every relative who had laughed with her.
Caroline’s mouth trembled.
“This is my dinner,” she whispered.
No one answered.
That was the moment she realized the center of the room had moved.
Not because Evelyn had taken it.
Because Caroline had built her celebration on the assumption that Evelyn could be safely diminished.
Now the assumption had collapsed.
Richard took one step toward Nathan.
“What did you call her?” he demanded again.
Nathan’s jaw tightened.
He did not look away from Evelyn.
“Sir, you heard me.”
The word sir did not soften the sentence.
It made the correction more brutal.
Richard’s face flushed dark red.
“You’re engaged to my daughter.”
Nathan’s eyes flicked briefly toward Caroline.
Then back to Evelyn.
“I am aware.”
Caroline flinched.
For the first time that afternoon, awareness sounded like a problem.
Evelyn remained silent.
Her polished shoes stood motionless on the carpet.
Her medals caught chandelier light.
Her expression gave nothing away.
That restraint made Richard angrier.
He wanted a fight he could win.
A daughter he could shout down.
A scene he could reframe as Evelyn ruining Caroline’s dinner.
Instead, Evelyn gave him nothing but the reflection of his own words hanging in the air.
Embarrassing older daughter.
Little Navy office job.
The guests remembered.
Richard knew they remembered.
Caroline knew too.
Her champagne glass rattled against her ring.

Nathan’s salute did not waver.
