Chapter 6 - The Engagement Ring Stops Sparkling
Caroline lowered her champagne glass slowly.
Her engagement ring remained huge and bright, but it no longer commanded attention.
Nathan’s medals did.
Evelyn’s sleeve stripes did.
The silence did.
Caroline looked at Nathan as if he had publicly chosen another woman.
In a way, he had.
Not romantically.
Worse for her pride.
Professionally.
Morally.
He had chosen truth over her family’s story.
“Nathan,” she said, voice cracking. “Tell them you’re mistaken.”
The entire room tensed.
Nathan did not lower his hand.
“I am not mistaken.”
Caroline’s face twisted.
“Then why didn’t she say anything?”
Evelyn finally looked directly at her.
Caroline took a half step back.
Still, Evelyn did not speak.
The refusal felt deliberate now.
Not weakness.
Control.
Richard seized on Caroline’s question.
“Yes. Why didn’t you announce yourself properly?”
A faint change crossed Evelyn’s face.
Not amusement.
Something colder.
Nathan’s salute remained raised, but his jaw flexed.
He understood military rooms.
He understood civilian arrogance.
He understood that Richard was trying to make Evelyn responsible for not stopping the humiliation Richard had created.
Evelyn’s mother whispered, “Richard, please.”
He ignored her.
“You came here dressed like this to make some kind of point?”
Evelyn’s eyes settled on him.
The ballroom air tightened.
Nathan’s salute still held.
Guests leaned forward without meaning to.
Everyone expected Evelyn to answer.
But the prompt of the moment would not let her reveal her work, her authority, her missions, or the full history behind the uniform.
So she only stood there.
Her silence made Richard’s accusation sound ridiculous.
Because she had not pointed at herself.
He had.
She had not demanded laughter.
He had invited it.
She had not made Nathan salute.
Her rank had.
Caroline’s lips trembled violently.
“This was supposed to be my perfect day.”
Evelyn’s gaze shifted to her sister.
