Chapter 9 - The Salute That Would Not End

Nathan’s arm began to ache.
He did not lower it.
Not before Evelyn acknowledged it.
Not before the room understood he was not performing courtesy.
He was recognizing rank.
Evelyn watched him with unreadable eyes.
Then her gaze shifted to his medals.
Nathan felt it like inspection.
Not hostile.
Precise.
His posture sharpened even more.
Caroline saw the change and almost sobbed.
She had admired Nathan’s military bearing when it made him look impressive beside her.
Now that same discipline belonged to Evelyn.
Richard’s hand shook at his side.
“You knew her?” he demanded.
Nathan answered carefully.
“No, sir.”
That made it worse.
He had not saluted a friend.
He had not saluted from affection.
He had not saluted to embarrass them.
He had saluted because the uniform required it.
Because Evelyn’s service required it.
Because the truth stood in front of him whether the family liked it or not.
Their mother whispered Evelyn’s name again.
This time, there was grief in it.
Evelyn did not look away from Nathan.
The room waited for her reply.
The prompt of the moment held it back.
No classified work.
No recent mission.
No full authority.
No explanation of what she would say after the salute.
Only suspense.
Richard’s eyes darted around the ballroom as if searching for someone who would laugh again.
No one did.
Caroline’s champagne glass finally touched the table with a soft, shaking clink.
Her hand came away wet.
Nathan remained motionless.
Evelyn’s face softened for the smallest fraction of a second.
Not enough for the family.
Enough for a trained officer to see.
Nathan’s eyes flickered with relief.
Then Evelyn looked toward Richard again.
May you like
All softness vanished.
