Chapter 7 - Richard Steps Over the Broken Glass

Richard looked down at the shattered wineglass.
Red wine spread across the polished floor near his shoes.
For a second, he seemed unsure whether to step around it, call someone to clean it, or pretend it had never fallen.
He stepped over it.
The movement was aggressive.
Too aggressive.
A man trying to walk back into control.
He charged one step toward Nathan and pointed between him and Evelyn.
“What did you just call her?”
His voice cracked on the last word.
Nathan did not flinch.
“Admiral, ma’am,” he had said already.
He did not repeat it.
He did not need to.
The title still lived in the ballroom.
Richard turned toward Evelyn.
“Say something.”
Evelyn’s face stayed unreadable.
That made him more desperate.
“Say something!”
Nathan’s salute remained frozen.
The guests recoiled at Richard’s raised voice.
His wife grabbed her pearls again.
Caroline’s eyes stretched wide, suddenly afraid of how public her father’s panic had become.
Evelyn slowly turned her head toward Richard.
The entire ballroom followed the movement.
It was small.
Controlled.
Devastating.
Her eyes met his.
No daughterly pleading.
No anger.
No apology.
Just the calm authority of someone who had commanded rooms where Richard’s temper would mean nothing.
Richard’s mouth opened.
Closed.
He had spent years calling her difficult because she did not fold.
Now, in front of Nathan Reed, that same stillness looked like rank.
Nathan finally spoke, still holding the salute.
“Sir, I recommend you lower your voice.”
A gasp moved through the guests.
Richard stared at him.
Caroline looked as if the floor had disappeared beneath her.
Her fiancé had just corrected her father at her own engagement dinner.
May you like
And he had done it without looking away from Evelyn.
