Chapter 1 - The Locked Dining Room

A grieving heiress discovers her husband and his sister forged documents to seize her inheritance, then calls the powerful trustee he fears while someone begins opening the locked dining room door.

The rain hit the tall dining room windows so hard it sounded like fingers tapping from outside.

Mara stood beside the polished dark wooden table, one hand gripping the back of a chair, the other pressed against her stomach as if she could hold herself together through will alone.

The chandelier above them burned warm and golden, spilling light over crystal glassware, cream walls, heavy curtains, and the black folder tucked beneath Daniel’s arm.

Then Daniel turned the dining-room lock.

Click.

The sound cut through her harder than thunder.

He pivoted slowly toward her in his tailored navy suit, silver wristwatch catching the chandelier light.

Celeste stood beside the table in a champagne satin gown, arms crossed, lips curved in a vicious smile.

Daniel walked toward Mara like a man approaching something he already owned.

“It’s time to cash in your inheritance.”

Mara’s fingers tightened around the chair.

“My father left me a trust,” she whispered, “not a trap.”

Daniel slammed the black folder onto the table.

Crystal glasses jumped.

Papers burst partly open, covered in signatures Mara did not remember making.

A gold pen rolled toward her hand.

Daniel caught her wrist and forced it toward the document.

Mara recoiled, tears in her eyes.

Then she saw the repeated signature.

Her name.

Again and again.

Too perfect.

Too early.

Too dead.

She froze.

Celeste leaned forward, one red-nailed hand pressing against the table.

“Sign before this family loses patience.”

Mara twisted her wrist free.

Her tears stopped.

She lifted one page toward the chandelier light.

The date glared back at her.

Before her father’s funeral.

Before his burial.

Before Daniel had even stood beside her coffin-gray grief and promised to protect her.

Mara slowly looked at him.

Then she reached for her phone.
