Chapter 6 - The Phone on Speaker

Mara placed the phone on the dining table between them.

Not in her hand.

Not hidden.

Open.

Speaker on.

Helena Voss’s voice filled the locked room with calm authority.

“Mara, are you safe?”

Daniel’s eyes flicked to the locked door.

Celeste’s hand flew to her mouth.

Mara looked at both of them before answering.

“I’m in the dining room with Daniel and Celeste.”

A pause.

Then Helena said, “And the folder?”

Daniel’s face twisted.

Mara stared at the phone.

“You knew.”

“I knew your father feared they would move before probate pressure peaked.”

Daniel slammed one fist on the table.

“This is absurd.”

Helena did not raise her voice.

“Daniel, I can hear you.”

His lips parted.

No argument came.

Celeste whispered, “Helena, this is a misunderstanding.”

“No,” Helena said. “Misunderstandings do not require locked doors.”

Mara looked toward the dining-room lock.

Her throat tightened.

The click from earlier replayed in her mind.

Helena continued.

“Did he present the black transfer folder?”

Mara’s eyes dropped to the documents.

“Yes.”

“Did he use the gold pen?”

Mara’s hand shook.

“Yes.”

Daniel’s face drained further.

Celeste gripped his shoulder with both hands, as if he could still protect her from the voice coming through the phone.

Mara asked, “How do you know that?”

Helena’s silence lasted one second too long.

Then she said, “Because your father knew exactly what bait they would use.”

Mara closed her eyes.

Her father.

Even dying, he had known.

Even while Mara sat beside his hospital bed believing Daniel was her anchor, her father had seen the hands reaching toward her inheritance.

Daniel lunged suddenly for the phone.

Mara snatched it up before his fingers reached it.

The chair blocked him again.

Helena’s voice sharpened.

“Daniel, step back.”

He froze.

Not because Helena was in the room.

Because she sounded like someone who did not need to be.
