Chapter 8 - The Door Handle

The door handle turned only once.

Slowly.

Not opening.

Not rattling.

Just moving enough to prove someone stood on the other side.

Celeste made a strangled sound.

Daniel spun toward the door.

Mara stood still with the phone in her hand.

Helena’s voice came through the speaker.

“Do not open it yet.”

Daniel turned back, eyes wide.

“Yet?”

Mara looked at the phone.

“Helena?”

No answer to that.

Not directly.

The prompt of the moment allowed suspense, not arrival.

The identity outside remained hidden.

No police shown.

No trustee entering.

No final authority revealed.

Only the door handle.

Only Daniel’s panic.

Only Celeste’s fingers digging into his shoulder.

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“Who is outside?”

Helena said, “The better question is why you locked Mara in.”

His nostrils flared.

“I locked the room because she was hysterical.”

Mara laughed once.

Cold.

“You locked the room before I touched the documents.”

Daniel’s face twisted.

He looked at the forged page still pressed against his chest and finally tore it away.

The paper shook in his hand.

Helena spoke again.

“Tell me he finally showed you the forged documents.”

Mara’s eyes closed for a moment.

Not from fear.

From recognition.

Finally.

That word meant Helena had been waiting.

Her father had been waiting.

Everyone who loved her truly had feared the moment would come.

Daniel stepped toward the phone.

Mara lifted it higher.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

Celeste whispered, “Daniel, what did she do?”

Mara looked at Celeste.

“She didn’t do this. You did.”

Celeste’s mouth trembled.

The arrogance drained from her face, leaving only fear.

The door handle moved again.

This time, Celeste recoiled so violently her diamond earring swung against her jaw.
