Chapter 10 - The Door Does Not Open

No one entered the dining room.
Helena did not appear.
Police were not shown.
The person behind the locked door remained unknown.
The final legal consequences were not revealed.
The story ended inside the rain-soaked mansion dining room, beneath warm chandelier light and dark shadows, with crystal glasses trembling on the polished table and forged documents spread open beside a black folder.
Mara stood several feet from Daniel, smartphone in one hand, her ivory blouse wrinkled, her bracelet glinting faintly as rain streaked the windows behind her.
Her tears had dried.
Her face was pale.
But her eyes were cold, focused, and awake.
Daniel stood near the table in his navy suit, the forged page trembling against his chest where Mara had slammed it moments earlier. His silver wristwatch rattled softly against the wood as his hand shook.
Celeste clung to his shoulder in her champagne satin gown, diamonds flashing while terror stripped every trace of smugness from her face.
The gold pen lay beside the documents.
The black folder remained open.
Mara held the phone between them.
Helena Voss’s unseen voice filled the room one last time.
“Tell me he finally showed you the forged documents.”
Daniel’s lips parted.
No lie came out.
Celeste looked toward the dining-room door.
The handle moved once from the other side.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
Nobody entered.
Mara did not look away from Daniel.
For the first time that night, he was the one trapped between the documents, the witness on the phone, and the door he had locked himself.
The rain struck the windows harder.
The chandelier light caught the forged signatures.
Mara’s voice stayed silent now, because the room had already heard enough.
Daniel stared at the phone.
Celeste stared at the door.
May you like
And Mara stood in the center of the inheritance they tried to steal, finally understanding that her father had not left her alone.
He had left her protected.
