Chapter 3 - Margaret Blocks the Door

Margaret moved faster than anyone expected.

For an elegant woman in black sequins and heels, she crossed the foyer with surprising force, one arm sweeping out to block the open path toward the front door.

Her gold bracelets rattled.

Her face twisted with theatrical outrage.

“You will not embarrass this family on New Year’s Eve.”

Julia stopped a few feet away from her.

Emma held Julia’s left hand.

Noah held the suitcase handle with both hands, as if helping his mother carry more than luggage.

Behind them, relatives stood frozen around the Christmas tree.

Some still held champagne glasses.

Some pretended shock.

Some looked annoyed that the entertainment had turned uncomfortable.

Julia looked at Margaret’s blocking arm.

Then at her face.

“You embarrassed yourselves.”

Margaret’s nostrils flared.

Brent laughed again, but this time it sounded forced.

“Julia, sit down. You’re being emotional.”

Julia turned toward him.

“About my children?”

He opened his mouth.

No answer came.

Margaret stepped closer, lowering her voice but not enough to hide it.

“They are not entitled to everything simply because you brought them here.”

Emma flinched.

Julia felt it through their joined hands.

That was the final small thing.

The flinch.

Not from a shout.

From a sentence.

Julia’s grief cooled into something firm and dangerous.

She leaned down and picked up Emma’s small overnight bag.

Then she looked at Noah.

“Do you have your gloves?”

Noah nodded.

His face was pale.

Robert finally moved, one step away from the fireplace.

“Julia, don’t do this.”

She looked at him.

There had been a time when that voice mattered.

When Robert’s disappointment could make her apologize even when she was right.

Tonight, he sounded like a man afraid of inconvenience.

Not a grandfather ashamed of what his grandchildren had endured.

“Do what?” Julia asked.

Robert looked toward the open doorway.

“Leave like this.”

Julia’s eyes sharpened.

“You mean visibly?”

Robert said nothing.

Margaret’s mouth tightened.

Julia reached past her and grasped the black front-door handle.

Margaret’s arm dropped just enough.

Julia pulled.

Cold air rushed in.

Snowlight flooded the foyer.
