Chapter 9 - The Empty Space Beneath the Tree
Inside the house, the empty space beneath the tree remained.
Not a physical emptiness exactly.
There were still gifts everywhere.
Too many gifts.
Boxes stacked high.
Ribbon spilling over chair legs.
Luxury paper reflecting chandelier light.
But the absence of gifts for Emma and Noah had created a hole larger than all the wrapped abundance around it.
Margaret had meant the empty space to teach gratitude.
Instead, it revealed greed.
Julia looked back through the open doorway once and saw it clearly.
The tree.
The laughter gone.
The toppled presents.
Tyler clutching the final gift now with less triumph than confusion.
He was a child too.
Not innocent in the moment, but instructed.
Julia would remember that.
Not to excuse him.
To place blame where it belonged.
Margaret’s face remained rigid.
Eleanor-like, Julia thought for a second, then pushed the comparison away.
This was Margaret.
Her own cruelty.
Her own glittering performance.
Her own humiliation staged for New Year’s Eve.
Robert finally stepped down one stair.
Snow touched his polished shoe.
He looked startled by it, as if he had forgotten the cold existed outside the doorway.
“Julia, at least tell me where you’re going.”
“No.”
His face tightened.
“I’m your father.”
The word sat between them.
Father.
A word that should mean defense.
Protection.
Standing between a child and harm.
Julia looked at Emma and Noah.
Then back at Robert.
“Tonight you were an audience.”
Robert flinched.
That finally hurt him.
Good.
Brent looked uncomfortable.
Margaret furious.
The relatives silent.
Julia placed one hand on the suitcase handle and one hand on Emma’s shoulder.
Noah stood at her other side, trying to be brave and not quite succeeding.
Julia’s voice softened.
“Let’s go.”
They turned from the house.
Behind them, Margaret whispered, “What happens at six?”
