Chapter 6 - Robert Looks at the Suitcase

Robert had avoided Julia’s eyes all evening.

Now he could not stop staring at the suitcase.

Silver.

Compact.

Already packed.

The detail bothered him.

It meant this was not a tantrum.

Not a dramatic exit invented after a bad joke.

Julia had been prepared.

Maybe not for this exact cruelty.

But for the possibility that the house would finally show her something she could not forgive.

The wheels left shallow lines in the snow as Noah helped pull it down the path.

Robert stepped into the doorway beside Margaret.

His polished shoes stayed carefully inside, just beyond the snow.

That was Robert.

Always near enough to say he was present.

Never far enough into discomfort to help.

“Julia,” he said, voice lowered. “Think about the children.”

She stopped.

Her shoulders tightened.

Slowly, she turned.

Emma and Noah turned with her.

Robert’s face twitched when both children looked at him.

He had wanted Julia alone.

Adults always preferred to use children as arguments when children could not hear.

Julia’s voice stayed calm.

“I am thinking about them.”

Robert swallowed.

“Dragging them into the cold—”

“Leaving cruelty is not dragging.”

Margaret snapped, “They were not harmed.”

Noah’s face changed.

A small, wounded disbelief.

Julia saw it.

Robert saw it.

Margaret did not care.

Julia stepped back toward the stairs just enough to make every word clear.

“You don’t get to decide that after laughing.”

Brent shifted behind them.

One of the relatives whispered something Julia could not catch.

Good.

Let them whisper.

They had laughed openly.

Now they could hide behind discomfort.

Robert looked at Emma.

For one second, shame moved across his face.

Then fear swallowed it.

“What arrives at six?” he asked.

Julia’s expression became unreadable.

The prompt of the moment would not reveal it.

Not yet.

No delivery shown.

No ownership revealed.

No financial withdrawal named.

Only the question hanging in freezing air.

Julia looked at him.

“You’ll be awake.”
