Chapter 8 - Brent Stops Laughing

Brent’s laughter had been one of the first sounds after Tyler’s insult.

Not the loudest.

Not the cruelest.

But memorable.

Julia heard it now in the silence after he stopped.

He stood near the doorway in his tailored dark suit, champagne glass still raised halfway, as if his body had not received the news that the joke was over.

He looked at Margaret.

Then Robert.

Then Julia’s suitcase.

Then the phone-shaped outline inside her shoulder bag.

His smile vanished completely.

“What did you mean by delivery?” he called.

Julia continued walking.

“Julia.”

She stopped again, not turning fully.

Brent’s voice sharpened.

“This dramatic exit doesn’t change anything.”

Julia looked back over her shoulder.

The snow caught in her dark hair.

Her earrings glinted faintly.

Her tears had dried enough to leave shining tracks.

“Then why are you asking?”

Brent’s face hardened.

No answer.

Margaret glared at him for showing fear.

Robert’s eyes stayed on Julia.

He knew the answer.

Not the details.

Not the ownership.

Not the financial support.

Not the six o’clock arrival.

But he knew Julia was not powerless.

Perhaps he had always known and simply preferred the convenience of pretending otherwise.

Emma and Noah walked carefully beside their mother.

Noah carried the small bag.

Emma held the edge of Julia’s coat.

The suitcase wheels bumped softly over snow-covered stone.

Inside the doorway, the relatives began whispering.

The first whisper was panic pretending to be gossip.

The second was guilt pretending to be confusion.

The third was calculation.

Julia did not need to hear the words.

She knew the rhythm.

People who had enjoyed hurting others always became experts in misunderstanding once consequences approached.

Margaret called out again.

“You will regret this.”

Julia turned one last time.

“No, Margaret.”

Her voice was calm.

“You will remember it.”

The doorway went still.
