Chapter 4 - The Training Sophia Never Mentioned
Marvin had not known about the training.
That was his first mistake.
He knew Sophia worked in finance.
He knew she wore delicate dresses.
He knew she smiled politely around his mother.
He knew she did not raise her voice during arguments.
He mistook all of that for softness.
He never asked about the years she spent in self-defense classes after college.
He never asked why she stayed calm when men shouted in conference rooms.
He never asked why she never stood with her back fully turned toward anger.
Sophia had not hidden those things.
He had simply never looked beyond the version of her he wanted to control.
Now his wrist was locked, his shoulder immobilized, and his pride scattered among broken plates.
“Get off me,” he whispered.
Sophia’s phone remained aimed at him.
“No.”
His face twisted.
“You can’t hold me forever.”
“I don’t need forever.”
The sentence frightened him.
He understood timing.
Evidence was not forever.
It only needed a few clear seconds.
His eyes darted to the smashed dinner table.
To the chair.
To the spilled wine.
To his phone vibrating with Camryn’s call.
To Sophia’s recording phone.
To her face.
The tears made him hopeful for half a second.
Then he saw the smile beginning beneath them.
Not happiness.
Recognition.
He had revealed himself too quickly.
Too completely.
On the third night.
That almost made her feel foolish.
Had she really expected him to wait years?
Had she really believed marriage vows could soften the entitlement Camryn had sharpened into him since boyhood?
Marvin’s nostrils flared.
“You’re going to ruin us.”
Sophia looked at the broken dinner.
“No, Marvin. You brought an audience.”
“There’s no one here.”
She lifted the phones slightly.
“Exactly.”
He did not understand at first.
Then he did.
No one to interrupt.
No one to explain for him.
No one to say Sophia exaggerated.
No one to protect the family image before the evidence formed.
Only him.
Only her.
Only Camryn’s voice.
