Chapter 8 - Camryn’s Portrait Smiles

Camryn’s portrait smiled from the screen like nothing in the world had cracked.
Styled blonde hair.
Pearl earrings.
Perfect makeup.
A polished mother-in-law expression Sophia had mistaken for elegance before learning how much cruelty could hide behind good posture.
The call kept pulsing.
Marvin watched it like a man watching a fuse burn.
Sophia adjusted her hold, keeping his wrist pinned but safe.
Her own hands shook now.
She hated that.
Then she accepted it.
Hands can shake and still do what must be done.
She looked around the room.
The dining table Marvin kicked.
The shattered plates.
The spilled food.
The wine stains.
The chair.
The phones.
The man on the floor.
The mother on the screen.
This was the whole marriage in one image.
A table prepared with care.
A man destroying it because he could not control the woman across from him.
A mother calling to supervise the damage.
Sophia’s thumb moved closer to the answer button again.
Marvin whispered, “She’ll blame you.”
Sophia looked down at him.
“She already did.”
“She’ll say you attacked me.”
Sophia angled the recording phone toward the room.
“Let her.”
His eyes widened.
Because he saw it then.
The broken table did not help him.
The scattered dinner did not help him.
His recorded words did not help him.
Camryn’s audio did not help him.
His fear did not help him.
The story he planned to tell had already lost its scenery.
Sophia took one breath.
Then another.
She did not answer the call.
Not yet.
The suspense was stronger with her thumb hovering.
Marvin stared at her thumb, silently begging.
The final consequence remained hidden.
No confrontation with Camryn.
No police.
No divorce.
No next morning.

Only the unbearable second before she decided whether the woman who taught him would hear what her lesson had become.
