Chapter 5 - The Table He Kicked

The dining table stood at a crooked angle now.

One leg had scraped a harsh line across the polished floor.

Sophia noticed it while keeping Marvin pinned.

A stupid thing to notice, maybe.

But trauma makes details sharp.

The red wine spreading toward the doorway.

A green bean stuck to the wall.

A broken plate beneath the edge of a chair.

A linen napkin half-soaked in sauce.

Her gold sandal near Marvin’s hip, steady against the floor.

She noticed everything.

Because later, someone might ask.

What happened first?

Where was he standing?

Did he touch you?

Were you afraid?

Did you defend yourself?

Did he say something?

Did anyone else encourage him?

Sophia had answers now.

She had more than answers.

She had footage.

Marvin stared at the phone.

“Turn it off.”

“No.”

“I said turn it off.”

“And I said no.”

His jaw flexed.

For one flicker of a second, rage returned.

Then his mother’s phone call kept vibrating, and fear swallowed it.

Sophia looked at the incoming portrait again.

Camryn’s smile was perfect.

A mother calling to see whether her lesson had worked.

Sophia’s throat tightened.

Not from fear this time.

From disgust.

“What did you tell her?” Sophia asked.

Marvin breathed hard.

“Nothing.”

The lie was weak.

His own face knew it.

Sophia angled her recording phone toward his.

The portrait glowed.

“She knew I resisted.”

His eyes squeezed shut.

“She doesn’t understand.”

Sophia’s laugh was soft and terrible.

“She understood enough to instruct you.”

The word instruct made him flinch.

Good.

Let him hear it like a courtroom word even if no courtroom appeared tonight.

No police.

No divorce.

No final consequence.

Only this dining room and the truth breathing between broken dishes.

Camryn’s call stopped.

For two seconds, silence returned.

Then the phone vibrated again.

Marvin whispered, “Please.”

Sophia looked at his face.

The same mouth that said obey now said please.

She did not soften.
