Dana’s investment fund purchased homes and trust interests through foreclosure, liens, and forced sales.
But she denied controlling Family Bridge.
“The organization existed before Julian and I joined.”
“Who runs it?” Detective Ellis asked.
Dana looked toward the observation-room camera.
“A woman named Evelyn Shaw.”
The name appeared nowhere in corporate records.
Evelyn selected target families through insurance claims, probate filings, school counseling referrals, and hospital bereavement programs.
She preferred families with one parent, one child, and an asset that could be isolated.
Adam had identified her only as E.S.
Jenna had never met her face-to-face.
Wade received instructions through encrypted calls.
Pike knew her as “Director.”
Julian claimed she represented investors.
Dana believed Evelyn had once worked in state child protection.
“She knows exactly which accusation makes each agency move,” Dana said. “Neglect for schools. Instability for courts. Threats for police. Incapacity for banks.”
“Why kill you now?” Ellis asked.
“Because the houses are traceable through my fund.”
Dana provided account access.
Investigators froze twenty-three properties acquired after Family Bridge interventions. Several former owners remained alive but had been told their homes were legally unrecoverable.
Claire’s house had been scheduled for transfer the following week.
The buyer was a shell company called Welcome Mat Holdings.
Dunham thought of Eli standing on the mat, key in hand.
Even the company name mocked the families entering their own homes for the last time.
Noah Grant’s identity records revealed his real name.

His mother died during an emergency psychiatric hold after Family Bridge placed him at Orchard Hills. Dana’s fund purchased her home.
No known relative remained.
Claire asked whether Benjamin could stay near Eli temporarily.
Officials arranged a therapeutic placement in the same protected facility, allowing the boys contact without pretending one could replace the other.
Eli gave Benjamin the blue backpack.
“You don’t have to copy me anymore.”
Benjamin touched the straps.
“What am I supposed to be?”
“Whatever you were before them.”
“I don’t remember.”
“Then you can start with Ben.”
The exchange broke something open in every adult watching.
Family Bridge’s power depended on making children believe identity belonged to whoever controlled the paperwork.
Adam’s original files contained one partial photograph of Evelyn Shaw.
The face was obscured by a car window, but she wore a county identification badge.
Detective Ellis submitted it for comparison.
The system returned three possible matches.

One had died.
The third currently worked inside the Oregon Department of Human Services as deputy director of emergency child placement.
