Chapter 7 - ADAM’S LAST INVESTIGATION Adam Hayes had worked as a claims investigator for a regional insurance company.
His job involved reviewing suspicious survivor-benefit applications and guardianship requests. Three months before his fatal crash, he began examining cases connected to Family Bridge.
He found the same patterns repeatedly.
A recently widowed parent.
A child with benefits or inherited property.
A new partner connected to the organization.
A crisis followed by emergency placement.
A house sold below market value.
Adam told Claire very little. He said the investigation involved dangerous people and promised to explain after he secured evidence.
Then his car left a mountain road during heavy rain.
Police classified the crash as accidental.
Sergeant Pike supervised the scene.
The vehicle’s work files disappeared before the insurance company recovered it.
Claire had always believed grief made her suspicious.
Now the suspicion had a name.
Molly remembered Jenna shouting about Adam’s files because the two parents had communicated secretly. Jenna sent Adam copies of Family Bridge documents before Molly was taken.
Detective Ellis searched the Hayes house again.
The hidden pantry room belonged to Wade, but Adam had built part of the shelving years earlier.
Eli remembered his father telling him that “the wall remembers where the nails go.”
Dunham examined the old screw holes behind the shelves.
One pattern formed a rectangle.
Inside the wall was a small metal box.
It contained a flash drive, a mailbox key, and a letter addressed to Claire.

The flash drive held Adam’s case notes.
He had identified Pike, Raines, Wade, and six other Family Bridge participants.
He also documented suspicious vehicle inspections performed before several fatal crashes.
His own car appeared in the final file.
A mechanic connected to Family Bridge had serviced the brakes two days before Adam died.
The mechanic disappeared afterward.
The mailbox key opened a private postal box near the airport.
Inside were original guardianship files, property-transfer records, and a small video camera.
The last video showed Adam meeting Julian Raines in a parking garage.
“You’re not helping families,” Adam said. “You’re manufacturing emergencies.”
Raines remained calm.
“Families manufacture their own weaknesses. We record them.”
“You drug parents.”
“I evaluate outcomes.”
“You place children where your wife can acquire their homes.”
Raines smiled.
“Then prove it before your family needs our services.”
The video ended.
Adam had not hidden evidence to protect money.
He had hidden it because he knew Family Bridge might enter Claire’s life after his death.
Wade’s arrival had not been chance.
He was sent to complete what Raines threatened.
The postal box also contained a photograph of a woman leaving Adam’s office on the night before his crash.
Claire recognized her as Dana Raines, Julian’s wife and director of the investment fund.
Dana had denied ever meeting Adam.
Dunham looked at the date.
The photograph had been printed three days earlier.
Someone had accessed the postal box recently.
The only person besides Adam authorized to open it was Jenna Pierce.
