Chapter 5 - Marcella’s first move
Marcella filed a police report the morning after the gala.
Battery.
Public humiliation.
Potential false imprisonment based on the closed ballroom doors.
I was not arrested.
My attorney, Miriam Cole, advised me to give no public statement beyond confirming cooperation.
I did.
The champagne incident was on video.
No dispute.
I had poured a bucket over Marcella.
She slipped.
Her wrist was bruised.
No fracture.
No concussion.
The doors had been closed for approximately twenty-three seconds before I ordered them opened.
No one was prevented from leaving after that.
Could the brief closure support a false-imprisonment claim?
Possibly, depending on what security communicated.
Did Dominic tell anyone they could not leave?
One guest claimed he did.
Dominic said he told people:
“Please remain calm.”
Video would matter.
I did not hide behind my daughter.
Miriam asked:
“Was Marcella threatening Elowen physically when you emptied the bucket?”
“No.”
“Was Elowen in immediate danger?”
“No.”
“Then your conduct was retaliatory.”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Apparently lawyers enjoy the moment clients stop pretending.
I faced a misdemeanor harassment/battery-type charge under local law? In New York, pouring liquid can support harassment or assault depending injury. The prosecutor eventually reviewed. At that point, no charge yet.
More dangerous than criminal exposure was the public narrative.
By noon, a clip appeared online.
It began with me lifting the champagne bucket.
It did not show Marcella crushing the photograph.
It showed:
Alaric Devereux dumping liquid over wealthy socialite.
Security closing ballroom doors.
Me saying:
“Your family works for mine.”
Perfect.
Marcella posted one sentence through her publicist:
No woman should be physically humiliated or threatened because she challenges a powerful man.
Also true in principle.
Infuriating in context.
Then:
I will not be intimidated by the Devereux family or its associates.
Associates.
A word designed for headlines.
By evening:
MAFIA HEIR THREATENS BUSINESS FAMILY AT CHARITY GALA.
