Chapter 4

Daniel stared at Evelyn’s robe as if it had appeared after her name.

He had seen the black fabric before.

He had noticed it when he stormed into the chambers, but he had explained it away inside his own arrogance.

A ceremonial robe.

A borrowed office.

An old woman playing authority to scare him.

Now the room rearranged itself around the truth.

Judge Evelyn Hart.

Federal.

Not retired in the way he thought.

Not powerless.

Not someone Clara could drag into a family fight without consequence.

Daniel’s mind moved fast.

Clara could see it.

He was already searching for the version that made him safe.

He lowered his voice.

“Judge Hart, this is clearly a private domestic misunderstanding.”

Evelyn’s eyes did not soften.

“You entered my chambers without permission, threatened a woman holding a child, and demanded the child be handed to you.”

His jaw tightened.

“That is not the context.”

“Then provide context.”

He looked at the phone on the desk.

It sat beside legal folders and a ceramic mug, ordinary and devastating.

“Is that recording?”

Evelyn did not answer the way he wanted.

She said, “You are speaking in a federal courthouse.”

The answer was worse because it did not give him anything to fight directly.

Clara felt Sophie’s small hands clutching her sweater.

“Mommy,” the child whispered, barely audible.

Daniel’s eyes flicked toward Sophie.

For one moment, he almost remembered to perform tenderness.

“Sophie, come here.”

Sophie hid deeper against Clara.

The rejection struck him visibly.

Anger flashed across his face before he smothered it.

Evelyn saw it.

Clara saw it.

The phone heard the shift in his breathing.

Outside the locked chamber door, footsteps stopped.

Someone was there.

Waiting.

Daniel heard that too.

His posture changed.

He straightened his jacket, lowered his hands, and tried to become the attorney again.

“Your Honor,” he said, “I respectfully request that this door be opened. I am being unlawfully detained.”

Evelyn’s expression remained still.

“No one told you to enter this room.”

“I came for my daughter.”

Clara finally spoke.

“You came because I left.”

Daniel’s head turned toward her slowly.

His control thinned.

“You took my child.”

Clara tightened her arms around Sophie.

“She is not property.”

His lips parted.

Evelyn watched him choose.

For once, the dangerous sentence did not leave his mouth.

That meant he understood now.

May you like

Too late.
