Chapter 5

Clara had forgotten what her own voice sounded like when it did not ask permission.
“She is not property.”
The sentence stayed in the chambers after she said it.
Sophie lifted her head slightly, dusty-pink sweater wrinkled beneath Clara’s hand.
Daniel looked at them with a fury he tried to dress as concern.
“You have filled her head with fear.”
Clara almost laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because fear had filled Sophie’s life long before Clara found the courage to name it.
Sophie feared keys in the lock.
A glass set down too hard.
Daniel’s footsteps on the stairs.
The sound of his phone vibrating during dinner.
The silence before he asked Clara why the grocery total was higher than usual.
Fear did not enter Sophie through Clara’s words.
It entered through rooms Daniel controlled.
Evelyn moved slightly around the desk, enough to place herself between Daniel and the path to Clara.
The motion was small.
Judicial.
Maternal.
Absolute.
Daniel noticed.
“You cannot interfere in a custody matter.”
Evelyn replied, “There is no custody order granting you the right to seize a frightened child from chambers.”
“You are biased.”
“Yes,” Evelyn said.
Daniel blinked.
Evelyn continued, “I am her grandmother. I am also a federal judge. One fact does not erase the other. That is why other people are listening.”
Daniel’s eyes snapped to the phone again.
Other people.
Not one.
Not just Evelyn.
Not just Clara.
His threats had not landed inside a sealed family room.
They had traveled.
Clara did not know exactly who was on the call. Evelyn had not told her every safety detail, probably on purpose. The less Clara knew, the less Daniel could force from her.
But Daniel knew enough to fear the unknown.
Outside the door, a low voice murmured something.
Another set of footsteps approached.
Sophie covered her ears.
Clara bent close.
“It’s okay, baby. They’re not coming for you.”
Daniel’s face twisted.
“You don’t get to promise that.”
Evelyn’s voice cut through the room.
“She does in my chambers.”
Daniel turned toward the judge.
That was when Clara saw the last mask begin to crack.
The lawyer could argue.
The husband could threaten.
The father could perform.
May you like
But the man underneath all of them could not tolerate being told no by a woman he could not intimidate.
