Chapter 7

For once, Daniel did not answer.
That silence told Clara more than any list could have.
He had used those unnamed connections like ghosts for years.
Judges who would believe him.
Clerks who owed him.
Colleagues who would testify.
Friends in custody court.
Friends in prosecution.
Friends in places Clara did not even understand.
The names did not need to exist to frighten her.
They only needed to remain vague.
Vagueness is useful to men like Daniel.
It lets fear fill in the blanks.
But Evelyn did not fear blanks.
She had spent decades forcing people to define terms.
“Names,” she repeated.
Daniel’s jaw flexed.
“You’re trying to bait me.”
“I am asking you to clarify a threat you made in my chambers.”
“I made no threat.”
Evelyn glanced toward the phone.
“Interesting.”
Daniel looked at it with hatred.
Clara felt Sophie shift.
The little girl whispered, “Grandma?”
Evelyn’s face softened for the first time.
Only slightly.
“Yes, sweetheart.”
“Is Daddy mad at me?”
Clara’s throat closed.
Daniel’s expression changed too, but not enough.
Before he could speak, Evelyn answered.
“No. Adults are responsible for their own anger.”
Sophie absorbed that.
Maybe not fully.
But enough that her grip on Clara loosened by a fraction.
Daniel hated being bypassed.
“She is my child,” he said.
Evelyn replied, “Then stop frightening her.”
His eyes flashed.
“I did not frighten her. Clara did this. Clara hides behind everyone. Clara lies, manipulates, cries, and then runs to Mommy like a child herself.”
Clara flinched, but did not fold.
Evelyn’s face became unreadable.
The phone remained on speaker.
Outside the door, the footsteps shifted again.
Someone knocked once.
Not entering.
Waiting.
Daniel’s head snapped toward the sound.
Evelyn did not look away from him.
“You hear that?” she asked.
He said nothing.
“That is the difference between authority and violence. Authority waits until the record is clear.”
Daniel swallowed.
The chamber door stayed locked.
No arrest shown.
No custody order announced.
No final outcome.
Just the waiting pressure of people outside the room who had heard enough to know the next move would matter.
Clara looked down at Sophie.
For the first time, she realized the chamber was not a trap around her.

It was a shield.
